Post My HD150 is burning rich.

Last night I went for cruise around town and my truck started to run very poorly and then stop. The motor started to flood very bad, the exhaust looked like diesel smoke. I had a similar problem with my last F150, but in both trucks it did not occur until I put in a K&N air filter. The HD150 has a Gen II FIPK while m last truck just had the filter. I talked to a Ford service man and he said that the oil in the filter starts to plug up the Mass Air Flow Sensor. When ever my last truck flooded I always checked the sensor and it was always clean. Has anyone else had this problem, any fix?

I was warned about the same thing since I'd like to put a K&N in my HD. I've been using a K&N in a SVT Contour for over 2.5 years--dealer installed when car brand new-- with no bad results; cleaned and re-oiled it just before a 4500 mi road trip in May and sure made the car quicker and increased gas mileage. Yet dealer implied I might be toying with the warranty on the HD for the very reasons you mentioned if I put a K&N on. Yet the body shop manager at this dealership has had his K&N on his L since dayone with no ill effects. Any further experience out there?

Thanks for the feed back caseyk. Talked to my dealership and they said the Gen II would not affect the warranty. I called K&N customer service line and they said the filters do not plug up the air sensor, they have tests to prove it. They also said that there is similiar problems reported with other Ford trucks. K&N requires a written letter from Ford service stating that it was the oil from the filter plugging up the sensor.

I know for a fact that some K&Ns that come pre-oiled have WAY too much oil on them.

Ive seen a dyno on a bike before and after k&N installation that actually LOST hp.

After spraying down the K&N it worked just fine.

I dont see how the oil would get sucked into the engine as the oil would literally have to be DRIPPING off the filter for that to happen..but I guess anything is possible.

Look at the maf sensor...do the little "wires" inside look cloudy or dirty?

Obviously if they are dark red then they have a valid claim..if not..then they are pulling your leg.

I know that I was surprised at the amount of oil on the K&N when I pulled it out of the SVT this May--I reconditioned it exactly a year ago but there certainly was a lot of dirt and dead bugs that came out on cleaning. Obviously cleaning helped since pickup and gas mileage have increased. These cars are also notorious for 'check engine' light conditions--it can be a bad gas cap or a number of other inocuous things--I've had none of this with the K&N in place on the SVT. And I can't believe the 5.4 in our trucks has a more powerful suction than the free reving engine in the SVT. I would really like to put a K&N in my HD but if any other owners have installed one, let us know.
