Question HD Exhaust

I was thinking about changing the stock exhaust to the HD exhaust with the dual pipes on the side. The local dealer told me the exhaust and tips would be $180. My question is, Is there a noticable sound differecnce between the HD and normal exhaust?

In the majority of the press releases I have read it always refers to the exhaust sound as a "rumble", but to me it is a whisper. For example in Pickuptruck.com it states "The exhaust is a sport-tuned SVT Lightning muffler ending in dual chrome 3-1/2-inch "slash cut" exhaust tips." I did not want cab "drone", but did want a sound at the back. I finally had a Flowmaster Series 50 installed and kept the same tailpipe and exhaust. It gave me the sound I wanted (not loud, nor quiet.) A series 40 is louder and a series 60 is quieter.

You ought to consider going true duals. It's almost there now. I'm going to have a cut made just before the Y pipe and run duals and a crossover pipe back to a DI/DO Magnaflow then to stock tail pipes. I just can't believe Ford didn't give us true duals while they were at it. So close.

The morning I picked th HD up in Minneapolis, I stopped at a Harley-Davidson dealership and literally cleared the place of customers and employees as they all came out to see the new truck. Several people asked if I'd start it up because they had heard how great it was supposed to sound.

Needless to say, everyone was disappointed.

But, "everyone" is also always disappointed with the factory sound from their 2-wheel harley, also. Right?

I was told that Harleys sound like Harleys not from any tricks done on the exhaust, but from the design of the engine itself. Pipes just make the distinctive sound louder.

I'm a tad disappointed with the exhasut sound from my '01 HDS. I wish it was a bit louder and deeper. I read that the exhaust note was "tuned" to mimmic the Harley sound, so I hdn't planned any exhaust work in the future, but I just can't hear the similarity. I don't want to bring down the house, or anything like that (as is, I gotta park it in a multi-level parking structure in my condo and it reverbs quite a bit), but a bit more would be nice.

MotorWorf, yep, you are right about disappointment with the factory Harley scoot exhaust, too. Am not planning on changing the HD truck muffler and as it has broken in, it is slightly louder now.

As to my bikes, yep, changed all the pipes and they all sound GREAT.

I am trying to keep the overall appearance of the truck the same. I have added the 2001 windshield (because the old one cracked) and put an HF/F150 Emblem on the tailgate (got the idea from this board) and a couple of other mods that I also got from this forum. I have been riding two wheels for more years than I care to remember, and have always had a modified exhaust system. The Flowmaster I finally decided on was because of reading several items from this message board. Cost was $274.00, and as stated previously feel the right choice was made.
