Can't you just buy the screws from Ford, the same ones used on the Lighnting? Would that make life easier then using washers or cutting the stock screws that came on our trucks?

Official dealer price for Lightning tail light screws - $19.95 per piece. Sorry, but I shy away from the dealer as often as possible.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the detailed and good explanation, baddgene! I went and looked inside the tailgate as you suggested and can see there is plenty of room in the recessed holes for washers.

Won't likely find the rubber coated ones as you used, but it looks like about any washer will work OK.

baddgene, how many screws hold the lights in? Just the two that are seen when the tailgate is lowered? How much shorter did you make the screws with the washers -- sounds as if you put two 1/4 inch washers on each screw to shorten each screw a full 1/2 inch? They must be long screws?

Thanks,
Don

HarleyGuy, two screws hold each tail light in. Once you take the screws out, you have to manipulate (slide) the entire lens towards the rear of the truck. Then you'll see that there are two "****" for lack of a better word, on the lens holding it in place; like a puzzle. I believe the screws are 1 1/2 inches long and they need to be probably 1 1/4. You're right any washer should do, as long as they are 1/4 inch washers; to fir the screw and the recession in the truck. If you like, I can send you the washers I used, they are perfect. They only cost 40 cents so it's not a problem really. My way of giving back for the help I've been given. Just lemme know Bro!

Hey Harleyguy ... or anyone else looking for those washers, you probably have a NAPA auto parts store somewhere near you, there's like 6,000 in the U.S. Call and ask them for Rockford part # 8069-035 galvanized washer with bonded neoprene. Neoprene helps insure you don't get water leaking in around the screw shaft.

Cool

I'll check with NAPA as there is one locally here. Otherwise, I'll ask baddgene for some assistance. Thanks to maine-s'crew and baddgene!

I just installed the '01 L taillights on my '97 flairside. You can use fender washers (the ones with smaller holes) for this install. I recomend using stainless ones if you can get them. No need to use the special washers with the neoprene as the factory screws are self tapping (notice the screw holes have no thread). Four washers per screw is what I used. They are slightly wider than the factory screw washer is. Also, the part # for all '97-2001 screws is the same. You'll love the results. Good luck!
