Get Connected!!! Cell Phones, CB Radios, GPS and other Add-Ons
I am an amateur radio (Ham Radio) operator and have installed a VHF transceiver in my HD F-150. (See pics below) A lot of people have CBs in their vehicles, as well, and it would be interesting to see how they put them in.
My installation was pretty easy as I used an existing sheet metal screw for one side of the transceiver bracket and drilled just one more small hole for the second sheet metal screw. Then hardwired the unit directly to the battery with a separate inline fuse in each wire.
As you can see, I also installed a through the window mount antenna which is grounded from the inside of the cab to the truck frame so didn't need to use a mag mount in order to get the ground plane. This allows me to get in and out of my low garage door without hassling with removal of the antenna, plus it looks great.
Now, am thinking of adding a cell phone, but would like it installed as a speaker-type phone and not have to pick it up, etc. to use. Wonder if there are any suggestions on some type of holder as well as a speaker for it?
Also am thinking of adding a permanent mount for a GPS that wouldn't be too gaudy.
Gotta be "connected," right???

Depending on what type of cellphone you have, check out Canyon River Cellular for some ideas. If you have one of those portable all in one units like everyone is using these days you can get a little brackey that mounts next to the ashtry, below the A/C controls. It actually mounts behind the panel so as to look as if it belongs. I know their are kits out there for several brands that mounts a small microphone near the visor on the trim panel and a small remote speaker somewhere else. Hopefully that helps you a little. The mount piece is by panavise.

I've been thinking about adding a hands free kit for my PCS phone, too. Most cell phone makers also have them available for their phones. My leather case would probably have to go,but it only protects the
parts that don't see abuse anyway,so why not. Hopefully I'm getting the digital Brookstone compass I wanted for Xmas, it matches my Interior so well right out of the box. As for GPS,I can only dream for now, maybe next year?
