Question Superchip Install

I just received my superchip for my 2000 HD F150 and wanted to know if there were any tricks or tips in installing it or is it straight forward? Any help would be appreciated.

Thumbs up

I just recently installed my chip and other than the great advice from Mike, please take a look at this site:
http://www.f150world.com/superchip2.asp

Read through the instructions and pictures there and you should be ready to go!

My installation went without a hitch and all is working perfectly.

Talking

This is a crosspost from the Computer area, but thought it worthwhile to place here, too, as some HD F-150 owners don't always get over there.

Installed my new Superchip yesterday even though there were still about 8 gallons of regular 89 octane in the tank. Heck, I had the time to do it, so instead of resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery after the install I decided not to do the reset just yet. There was no pinging or any other problems and after driving yesterday and today, and after burning off 5 gallons or so I headed over to the Amoco station.

Filled 'er up with 21.5 gallons of 92 octane, pulled across the street into an empty lot, disconnected the battery, turned on the headlights and waited 5 minutes as per Mike's instructions.

Hooked up the battery, let it idle for about 5 minutes while resetting the radio, etc. and pulled out onto the road and hit the throttle: HOLY SH*T! The truck took off like a scorched rocket. The engine had noticeably more power and the shift points were higher and when it did shift it shifted firmly and fast. BTW, my Harley truck has only 750 miles on it, so it's still basically being broken in. Gonna have to watch that heavy foot!

This is a *great* improvement and recommend it for just about everyone. Am glad for all the advice I've gained from the forum. Mike was absolutely super as well. I probably wouldn't have spent the $$$ this soon if it hadn't been for all the positive comments and for talking it over with Mike.

Hey Harleyguy,
Thanks for all the usefull information. I installed my superchip today ( it took about 17 minutes to do ) It is fantastic, I can't believe the difference it makes. I also read one of your posts about you trading in your last truck with 9,000 miles on it, I did the same thing except mine only had 8200 miles on it. The wife was the big push in getting the HD truck : ) She made all the phone calls in locating one. What a saint. Have a good one.

Keep this thread updated on chip experience: gas mileage, performance, hard shifting etc--planning on Spring order so curious what positive or negative experiences are. Even after about 2k on truck now, engine takeoff power is up--suprisingly peppy for a truck engine as it breaks in. Thanks guys....

Hi harleyrules and a warm welcome! I was looking at your signature and noted that you need to add the HD Truck to it. At first I thought you might be driving a different model.

My wife was really riled up about the new truck and wanted me to get it. Same as she did with my new Road King. (Eat your hearts out, guys!! ) Of course, turn about is fair play and she now has a new Softail on order for her.

Now, I just gotta figure out what my extra job is going to be to pay for all this Harley stuff.

Hi casey,

Just in case you might not know, you can find plenty of that kind of information over in the Computer Chips section of these message boards. The beautiful Harley-Davidson model F-150's are no different from a "regular" 5.4 F-150 in terms of their powertrains or the Superchip, it's just like any other 5.4 F-150 in those aspects.

You're right on the money when you comment about it feeling like you have more power now at 2K miles, as it takes anywhere from 4K-8K miles in new vehicles for their engines to fully loosen up and make their rated power & gas mileage. While there is no specific break-in required, you'll probably notice it feels a bit stronger as you accumulate the next few thousand miles, as it comes up to it's rated power.

Best of luck with your HD truck!

Thanks Mike! will probably be getting in touch with you in March or April. I have been monitoring the chip section as well--notice some Lightning owners comments on harder shifting with the chip install--assume with the supercharged engine etc that this is more squirrly than our regular 5.4. I'm not planning to turn the HD into a race truck but am still impressed how more powerful it is feeling the more I drive it off the line. My SVT Contour engine didn't really feel good and loose until about the 12K mark--it really sings now with about 30K on it. Will stay in touch

Hi Casey,

Those SVT COntours are very nice, great little engines! They really wind, with the factory Extrude-honed parts. We make chips for them too, of course, and they respond very well.

And yes, we do make the Lightnings shift considerably harder than we do the "regular" F-150's, though they are still improved as well. With the Lightning, we have an SVT performance vehicle, so we make it shift like an SVT automatic should, so it will chirp the tires, etc. With the "regular" F-150, like you said, we're not trying to turn it into a race car, just reduce the slippage and give the shifts a better feel, nothing obtrusive or violent.

I want to get a superchip for my HD but have a question first.
I am planning on getting a SuperCharger (thru ford) this next spring. Will the chip work with the supercharger or does the supercharger come with an updated chip, or should I wait to order a "special" chip after the supercharger?

Has anybody else put, or plan on putting, a supercharger in their HD?

Lanna
