Exclamation Is occasional starting problems common...

I drive a 03 HD F150 and after driving and parking it, sometime when I go to start it it turns over, stumbles but does not start no matter how long I let the engine turn over. If I turn the key switch back and try again, it stumbles again but normally starts the second try. This doesn't happen often but enough that it's a nag. I've taken it to the Ford dealer and they reprogrammed the PCM to the lastest calibration. Initially I thought this fixed the problem but its back to it's old self again. It did seem to change the way it drives in terms of when it shifts and when the supercharger kicks in.

Let me know if anyone else is seeing this and if this is comon for vehicles with superchargers(I was told this by someone at the dealer). Also give me your opinion on if this is something you'd be concerned about.

Thanks,
JD

I have an 03 and it starts on the first turn of the key.
There is no reason why a supercharged engine shouldn't start as well as an N/A engine.
Yes, I would be concerned as it is unlikely to spontaeneously cure itself.
How many miles do you have on it? I changed my fuel filter at 20,000 even though the service interval is higher than that.
Is it throwing any codes?

I used to have that problem with the 2002 I had. I never had it looked at and traded the Truck in for other reasons.

I almost have 25k miles on it. So I'll be taking it in soon. The 25k service includes changing the fuel filter. It's not throwing any codes.

Should I be changing the fuel filter more often than recommended? I try not to overly maintain my vehicles and following the manufactures service manual base on the condition the vehicle is driven in.

Note: Mine starts on the first try every morning and after it has been setting for a while. It's when I'm making a lot of stops/short trips that it doesn't start initially on occasion.

I'm of the opinion that the manufacturers service intervals are just something to make it look good in those JD Power surveys.
Of course, everyone has a different opinion but I change my oil and filter every 5k using Kendal 5w/20 synthetic and a gennie Motorcraft filter.
The fuel filter was changed at 20k and I cut it open to find the old one pretty blocked. I will change this every 10k. Cheap insurance against going lean.
I dropped the trans pan and changed the filter at 25k when I fitted my valve body mod.
There's no way that the plugs will go 100k in a Supercharged engine.
I changed mine at 20k and will change them every 10k from now on.
Mind you, I do have some mods on my truck.

My truck does the EXACT same thing. I took it to the dealer and they claimed they started it 25 times and didn't notice anything.

bunch of BS. It also makes an unhealthy knocking/tap type sound as it starts as well that just plain scares me.

My truck is a 2005 5.4 3v

I've had the 25k service now and the fuel filter has been replaced. Since then I haven't seen the issue "completely". It has started consistenly over the past 2 weeks. I got 1 stumble but I didn't have to attemp a second start, so I'll let that one go. I'll keep you posted if it comes back.

Thanks for the input.

My 06 screw did that to me today after filling up took like 3 or 4 trys to get it to start. I purchased mine as a demo so it already has 9000 on it.

Hard Starting

I have a 2005 with 5400 miles on her, 5.4 Litre. Dealer told me that when you drive and Shut the Motor off the Fuel Pump, and Injector O-Rings and Seals Heat up and Expand, Then when you shut it off for a Short Period they are in the Between stage of Contracting/Expanding and the Motor is "Flooding" itself out. Mine does it when I shut it Down for short Periods less than an Hour. On startups after work or First one for the Day, I also have No Problem. He also does not know if Ford is Working on Correcting the Problem or Not.
I was wondering if any one else thinks if the Motor Could "Breath" more, would it help keep it cooler or cool it Down Faster on Shutdown if this may Correct the Problem?
Thanks. KR P

I have been thinking about what has happened to me and it brought back memories of a vapor lock on a carb. which i guess it sounds like just like ford said to you. When i finally get a chance to get to ford im going to question the service advisor and see if he has had any other complaints about it.

That breathing more idea sounds good. May give me a excuse to buy my exhaust sooner then later. maybe a better airfilter too.

We'll its back to its old self now, not starting on first try after short frequent trips where it doesn't get to sit for a while.

I attempted the following to correct it:

1. Had PCM firmware/software upgraded
2. Replaced fuel filter

If anyone finds a solution, please fill us all in.

Thanks,
JD

mine has done it a few more times now also. but when i get a chance to bring it in i know how to reproduce the problem. so when the stupid dealer says cant reproduce i can take him by the hand and show him. will post my results when i get to bring it in this week, if work slows enough.

nditech,

My warranty is up in Aug this year so I'm eager to hear a resolution on this. If the dealer you use is able to resolve it, it would be good to get the dealer name and contact info so I can have the dealer here contact them so they can explain the resolution.

A list of what they tried even if it was unsuccessfully is good info to know.

Keep us in the loop.

JD
