Question to HDF150 owners about towing.

Do you HD owners have problems towing with those 22 inch wheels? Are you limited in towing with those wheels?

And lastly has anybody put 24s on a HD and towed with it??

Thanks in advance..

Standard HD wheels are 20" not 22".

They do not affect the towing capacity. I don't see how wheel dia. could affect it.

Oops. my mistake.

You know, I never think of the 2004 up when I think of Harleys.
No offense intended to the owners but they just don't stick out as much on the road IMO.

The 00-03 has 20" wheels so I was partly right.

I have an 01 King Ranch that I put 24" wheels on. I still haul and tow things with it, but I don't load it to the max capacity by any stretch. Depending on what you want to tow, it could be sufficient. I towed a 6x12 dual axle Uhaul trailer loaded with furniture without any problems, but I wouldn't tow it for any extended period or on a regular basis.

We are close together. I am thinking about putting 24s on my 06 XLT SC. I will be hauling a 6x12 Haulmark enclosed trailer with (2)500 lb bikes, plus 200 lbs of gear. Will be taking 900 mile trips, and lots of short 200 mile trips. About 3 to 4 times a month.

I went to your gallery, and your 01 is tight, super duper tight. . With the 24s it looks like a different truck. Sheesh, I got to put 24s on mine. I will just have to crash and burn.

Thanks for the feedback..

Thanks for the comment. BTW, make sure you check the load capacity on the wheels you end up with, as well as looking carefully at the end result of your sidewall width. I compress my tires a fair deal when I load the bed with a yard of dirt, but by my calculations I am not exceeding the load capacity of either my tires or wheels, but they vary by style and brand.

Towing that much in a trailer shouldn't give you a very heavy tongue weight if things are properly loaded, so I doubt you will have any problems. The new body styles have a larger towing and payload capacity than the heritage anyway.

No man, I have a Lightning.. I think a lot of the tow rating depends on what size tires you have. The lightning has less of a tow rating than a regular F150, and the HD (00-03) had less than a lightning.

That Lightning is the coolest truck out there..

I am going to get this sorted out. I am finding that two bikes in a 6x12 enclosed is not such a heavy load. Might not pass 2500 lbs. I am sure I am going for 24s..

Thanks for the getback..

I have an 06HD and towed a Chariot trailer w/ 2 bikes (total weight about 2200lbs) to Florida, 1100 miles, with no problems. Speed varied from 60 to 80mph. Only problem was gas mileage, but I didn't but this truck to save money on gas The 22's were no problem, as was tow height. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that feedback. The smart move would be to go with 22s, and get a little bit of both worlds The 24s will cost about 35% more, and just might run into a slight problem. Picking up truck today (hopefully), will be towing 2 bikes from Baltimore, MD, to Atlanta, Ga, next week. That is going to be a 1500 mile round trip. Dam, it is tough to make up my mind!!

Thanks again,
