Harley 356- Need your Advice

Harley- Like you I painted my calipers and rotors last year, now rust is coming thru. Im going to try the Rustolum you previously recomended. What do you recommend me to use to clean everything before I paint. I know that some things will actually remove the old paint also. Dont know if I want to do that. Would rather just go over existing paint, so I have more layers of silver.

Also, Im going to paint the inside of my exhaust tips like you did, but I notice on the outside of my tips I have little spots of ??? rust, rubber I dont know what it is. How do I get rid of that? Thanks for the input

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know also. Thanks

you have to be careful what you use on chrome, because it can scratch and put swirls in it

anyway, for your calipers, if you have some rust, sand it off, and i cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol. rustoleum has been on the calipers since june and its still holding up just fine. I might repaint them Red this spring though just for a change of pace.

As for the exhaust, sand down the inside of the tip if its pitting or rusty inside at all, then brush the paint on. just make sure you get all the way back, because with the tip being nice and silver inside, you'll be able to see in there easier and notice where you didn't paint.
for all this i just used regular rustoleum and its held up fine to the heat.

I gotta redo my exhaust cuz i've neglected the inside, got some soot stains on the paint, but it'll take a whole 5 minutes to redo, no big deal and its held up for almost a year now.

as for tar and stuff on the outside chrome part of the tip, mothers mag and aluminum polish (NOT their chrome polish) works great for getting tar and stuff off. Then just hit it with a coat of zaino or something to protect them

Regarding your caliper paint job; the only way to ensure a good bond is to remove the existing paint since there is rust under the finish. either use a product called POR (paint over rust) found in the Eastwood catalog or thoroughly remove all signs of rust by sanding or sand blasting followed by cleaning with triple etch or another brand of metal conditioner following manufacturers recomendations, priming with epoxy primer then applying a top coat in the color of your choice. Use same brand components to ensure compatability.

There are no short cuts in refinishing unless you like to do it over time and time again.
