'02 HD Nerf Bars usable?

I was all set to buy one from a guy who I bought his stock HD exhaust from until I saw my friends '02 DSG HD. There set up so close to the body I can't possible see how they are usefull. Am I alone in feeling this way?? Even when I told my buddy what I was going to do he told me to wait until I saw his truck because he knew I would change my mind. What's the deal?

If you plan on using them as a step, they are useless. They are there strictly for visual purposes.

They are mainly there to give a visual effect of a chrome piped exhaust system, not to be used as a step.

I put some spacers..... about 3/4" on mine to move them out just a bit...... hopefully that will keep someone from dinging the side with their door.

Ha ha...that reminds me -

The first time I saw the HD in person at the dealership, I tried to step on the nerf bars. I almost tripped when my foot caught nothing but air.

they are nurf bars, not step bars. some how a while back people started interchanging their names and confuse the 2. nurf bars are just for looks. With the HD trucks what do you need step bars anyway with a factory lowered truck?
Plus there isn't any step area, if you step on these you'll put scratches in them and they'll get nasty looking in no time. They are just for looks, and they look awsome

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't realized it was there more for looks than function. And I didn't realize that "step bar" and "nerf bar" where two different things.

Got any pics of how far they extend out?

No pictures....... but it extended them out about 1/2 - 3/4 inch. They are bolted on at a downward angle, so you don't get the full 3/4". It still looks factory, and adds a little protection.
