Drove the competetion.....

Well, we went to my girls family for Thanksgiving. They are a GM family all the way (excetp my girl she drives a Honda) so they razz me about my Ford. We get along good.

Her brother took delivery, the previous week, of the '03 GMC 2500 that he had ordered a couple months ago. He had talked about it before and I said I'd like to check it out.

The first thing I wanted to see was under the hood. I'm not into the Vortec emblem or the pushrods in there but this 6.0 looked pretty nice. The most important thing I saw, and hope that Ford has seen, is the amount of room to work on this thing. These guys in the GM's wont have any trouble changing the plugs. I hope that the next gen F-series are easier to work on.

I walked around and feel that the fit and finish are pretty good. I'm used to my F150, and I think the interior in this GMC is boring and boxy. It had a couple of the bells and whistles though.

I haven't driven a SD Ford so I can't really compare this GMC to the comprable Ford. It's way different from my F150 though. It's a 4x4, so I could feel the major weight difference when driving it. It felt pretty good. I liked the acceleration and the transmission shifted smooth. The one thing that I didn't notice was peak torque. The '99 E250 I drive for work has the 5.4 and I can actually "feel" when torque is at it's best. This I couldn't tell in the GMC, but then I only put like six miles on it.

So, I had a chance to check out the competetion. It's wasn't all that bad. I don't think that I would buy one, but to the GM folks I'm sure this truck will suit them well.

Even though this guy bought the truck to plow/work with the one thing that I can tell is my truck, with it's 4.6 liters, is faster. To me that is a very good thing!

A friend of mine got drunk a couple of weeks ago. I went and drove him home in his 02 GMC 2500HD 4x4. It wasn't too bad at all. It has a 6.0 also. Rides a little rough when empty. I could live with a GM truck if I had to.

My friend came over yesterday in his new 02 Dodge quad cab 4x4, he was grinning from ear to ear with his new purchase.
I have to say, it drove pretty nice.
I got a chance to drive it for 20 minutes, and it seemed pretty snappy, I really couldnt find anything wrong with it.

I think all the new trucks today are pretty decent, sure, each has their own inherent problems, but overall, I think they're all pretty good.

I suppose it all boils down to preference, and unless something bad happens, i'll stay with Ford.

I will always look to Ford first, but it's good to see that we can give credit where credit is due. I'm pretty excited to see how the next gen F-series will compare to the GM and Dodge. Even though they might not have the highest "numbers", I think the Triton engines have the most going for them. We will have the three valve soon!

Hey Don. I've been here just about every day, there's just a lot going on right now so I don't always get a chance to relpy to posts. I've been watching you progress with that killer of a Lightning. I didn't get a chance to make it up to NED, other than that one time. I'll have to get up there next season. Maybe I could see you break into the 10's?

That would be cool, I would love to see me do that too. If I do get into the 10's I will then detune it a little to save the motor and go for consistancy.

See you this spring.

Ironically, when the Tundra came out I hated it and now I own one.

Yesterday, I saw a 2003 Tundra Limited stepside sport. Has anybody seen the Tundra stepside yet. It is pretty cool looking. Now limiteds come standard with steering wheel audio controls, and a power sliding rear window. Bucket seats also come with a Sequoia center console (like an Expy console in an F-150).

Then I see all of these new Fords, the Super Duty King Ranch and FX-4. The Super Duty luxury leather interior. Heritage F-150, King Ranch SuperCabs, blah blah blah.

Dodge has new engines, the 4.7 engine will roast the tires on my friends Dakota.

My Tundra came from the factory with Borla dual exhausts and a K&N filter. Never thought I would see the day that any truck came with those things.

It is a great time to own or shop trucks.

And remember, the only reason I went with Toyota is because my local Ford dealers are the worst. I've said before that we have more reputable drug dealers than Ford dealers.

IN fact, my friends V-10 SuperDuty had a bad vibration that felt like a bent rim or axle. After 4 or 5 tries at the Ford dealer to fix it, Good Year finally fixed it for him with a simple fuel injection cleaning. His truck is smooth as silk now and the guy at Good Year said he has done that on several V-10s to smooth them out. My friend likes his SuperDuty again and takes it to Good Year for everything.

They have plug's? My neighbor's 02' GMC Vortec doesn't have spark plugs.

Speaking of the competition, has anybody heard (or should I say, not heard) the new H.O. Cummins? That thing is unbelieveably quiet! Just a slight "whirring" sound from under the hood. I was very impressed. And 555 ft/lbs of torque!! Six-cylinder fury!

I'm a huge die-hard Ford fan, but I gotta give Dodge props.

Ford owns cummins. The '03 PSD now has #'s as good as or better than that.

Ford does not own Cummins - the majority of Cummins is still held by the Irwin family that started Cummins. Navistar makes the diesel used by Ford.
It's about time they quited that Cummins down! You can tell when an old Cummins turbo diesel is coming a half mile away!

Yeah, I see the new Powerstroke is supposed to have 560 ft/lbs, I hope it will be as quiet as the Cummins.

Yes, they make quite a few of them, sales of the Tundra are as strong as ever. If you've ever seen any Tundras, there is a chance that you just didn't notice that it was a 4wd. The problem is that a Tundra 4X2 sits an a nearly identical height as it's 4x4 brethren.
