Has anyone had a major operation while awake?
Has anyone had a major operation while awake?
Spinal rather then a local?
My surgery date for my hip replacement (at 26 years old) has been moved forward to 3 weeks from now since it was getting really bad. I went to see the surgeon again and found out he would rather give me a spinal since I will bleed less. I was like sure whatever. SO I get home and do some research and fins out a Spinal means they paralyze you from the waste down but don’t put you to sleep so I am going to be awake for the whole operation. Hmm I guess I will be able to hear the sawing and ripping and hammering of my old hip coming out and the new one going in. This should be fun. Has anyone else ever had a major operation and had a spinal. I assume I will be on happy pills so I will be out of it and not know what going on. I hope LOL

Can I ask why you need a hip so young? Is it arthritus? I know someone who works on a ward with hip replacements. You will probably be out in three days, and with a spinal it is safer. They don't keep you long anymore. Good luck.
It goes in your weewee to make you pee since the spinal freezes your bladder.
Its a long tube.

I have a couple of friends who have had hip replacements and have had spinals.
You are already aware that you will be hearing some freaky things. I'm guessing they will give you a shot of something to keep you calm, but even then, they tell me it's still freaky when they put your foot next to your face.
You MUST follow instructions after the operation. If you don't, you'll find yourself back in surgery like one of the two guys I know. He wasn't careful and had the joint pop out a couple of times. They ended up putting him back under the knife to fix it again.

I had a skateboard accident one time where I fell going down a long a$$ hill doin' about 25mph. That's fast on a skateboard. All I can remember is waking up on the operating table and the Doctor was sewing the back of my head up. I had 14 stitches in all, and a cracked skull. And 5 or 6 years of mental problems. Depression and anxiety attacks just to name a few.
