Roggi,

You make a good point, people fear the unknown. Bee stings will likely kill more people in the US than this sniper will this year.

Personally I think the media hype causes a lot of the fear. If he starts shooting a lot, I'm going to get some Kevlar and charge $5.00 per vehicle to gas them up!

I'll be the first to admit if he gets closer I will be watching my butt and doing all the gassing up in my wifes car..... without my three year old in it. As it is, his last shooting was about 100 miles away.

Same goes with the fears of sending people to Iraq. During the first Gulf War, it was the first time in history that less people died in a one year period than during the previous year in peacetime. So statistically it was safer to be invading Iraq.

Will these families get huge sums of money from the government? Regardless of who the shooter is, it is terrorism. It's just a matter of time until the right lawyer brings a case against the US on the matter.

It all boils down to what is acceptable. We all accept that driving can kill. We all accept that people die every day from bee stings. We all accept that people die falling off cliffs every day. These are all acceptable deaths and risks. Hell, even living in certain areas, you would not be surprised if somebody got shot. It's all acceptable deaths so long as it doesn't happen to you or your family. That's the rub.

If the killings were happening in the slums, would there be this kind of coverage? Of course not. We expect killings to happen in slums and ghettos. It's acceptable. What the sniper is doing is he's killing people in areas where it's not acceptable. It's where "everybody" goes. It's where "we" shop. He's shooting "our" kids and family members. Suddenly, "we" are not safe.

It's the same thing with what happened on 9/11. The bombings in Israel, while tragic, didn't affect us much. It happened to them, not us. Well, things sure have changed, haven't they?

Time to realize that killing anywhere is not acceptable.

honey....I don't feel well, would you mind fueling the car up for me?? J/K.

The thing is, that he isn't anything special, ANYBODY that puts a few hours into getting to know a quality rifle could do what he is and more.

We just need to let him know that we have our own snipers looking for JUST HIM.

I had to fill up the Screw today with gas for the first time since these sniper shootings. I thought "what if" for a second ... looked around at how easy a target I could be ... what a weird feeling. It was just a second and I was over it ... I was on the way to the baseball field with my six year old son and one of his friends for an afternoon of fun. It was just us out there playing baseball.

If I were filling up my gas tank there, here's what I would do. I'd park close to an inside pump where the building is on one side of the pumps and I'm parked on the other. Then I'd leave my door open to shield me from the front. Once I have the gas flowing, I'd step away and stand between the pumps. If I were really obssessing, I'd go so far as to park at an angle with the rear bumper close to the pumps so only a little slit is open to the road.

Point is to keep yourself covered. Use common sense by using a station that's not located where a sniper can easily hide.

I personally think they should build big wooden 8ft tall fences around gas stations so their isn't any way the sniper can shoot in

Ok, I am really not trying to be a smart A$$ here, I just wanted to say that Kevlar is not designed to stop a high powered rifle round. A Kevlar vest will not stop a .223 round.

When I pump gas, I open the hood and pretend to look for an oil leak. I quickly work my way down to the oil pan and close the hood behind me. I then wait for the automatic shutoff before climbing out.

***WARNING***
Do not let the hood latch behind you.
If this happens, you will be forced to call out for help.

(You will also hear things like:
"Hey Frank, that Ford has one of those talking alarms")

Ox brings up a good point. Plus, haven't a good majority of the kills been 'head shots'? I know he's tagged a few in the abdomen but, I thought I rememebered hearing about some head shots.

That being the case, Kevlar, again, is out of the question.
