Dog Question

Ok this is off topic but since we've all posted picture of our dogs and I really don't feel like joining a Dog Forum at this time I figured I'd toss out my question to all the fine folk here at F150online.

We just adopted our female lab a couple of months ago. She is about 18 months old and a pretty good dog. But she like to dig. We keep her inside most of the time and she has a bunch of toys but she likes to dig.

How do you get a dog to stop digging in the yard??????

Anyadvice would be helpful.

Thanks

Labs are notorious for digging, but usually they dig to get out of the yard (under the fence). Usually they dig because they get a scent... I have never had a problem with dog digging, but I know of others that putting black pepper (or cayenne pepper) or something else not pleasant to a dog to mask the scent will help. After a while, some of the dogs would stop digging when every hole they dug ended up with an unpleasant scent....

Be careful though, make sure you wash your hands good, if the dog smells the same scent on you that it gets from the hole.........

Thumbs up

Don't stop her from digging.
Just put her on a runner.

Later, you can plant some vegetables.

Just like any other training you give a dog, it just takes a little bit of time and repetition. If you happen to see her diggin in the yard, go out there to her, grab her snout in your hand (like youre eating a hoagie ) and look into her eyes so she knows who is boss, and tell her BAD or NO in a stearn, strong voice. (use whatever word you use for bad, weather its bad, no no, whatever) Or try grabbing one of her digging paws and smack it just firm enough for her to know you dont like what she's doing. It will take a while, probably a couple weeks, depending on how often you catch her in the act. Just know that it takes lots of repetition to burn it into her head.

Good luck!

What Goober said. You have to catch the dog in the act to correct it. i was told that the reason a dog digs is because it is bored. Go out and play with the dog.

I know dogs chew on stuff and dig when they are bored but I had just gotten back from walking her and runnig her at the park. I had fed her (outside) and left her there while I went into shower. When I went to let her back in her paws were all muddy and she had dug a big hole in the back yard.

I could plant a small tree in the freakin hole nevermind the veggies. She doesn't do this all the time and really only does it when she is alone in the back yard and like I said she's a pretty smart dog and not easy to catch in the act. ...

Has anyone tried the pepper trick and had it work???

Dealing With Dogs That Dig

I had a Springer Spanial/Lab mix that liked to dig. He would dig a huge hole next to the house to lay in if I left him outside too long. He became a very happy, well behaved dog if I took him for a walk every day or played catch with him.

AJ, thanks. I think part of it is going to be supervising her while she is outside. I know she's still a pup as Labs go they keep their puppy personality until after 2 years and longer with some dogs. So we are very good at giving her a lot of attention and excercise.

I walk her about 30 to 45 minutes every morning at noon she gets taken out and played with. Usually fetch with the kids and then I either take her fo another walk at about 7 PM or the kids take her outside and play with her again.

so if the article is right she wasn't digging to get cool as it was pretty cool this morning. She wasn't digging to try and get out as where she digs the hole is not anywhere near a fence or a gate and you would asume that since she had just come back from a long walk and had just eaten something she was digging becuase she is phsyco....

I think the hints should help though. I will try to block off the area where she is digging at the most and will try to keep a closer eye on her when she is outside.

thanks again...
