keep an eye on www.slickdeals.net

i used some codes they had on there when i bought my dell (which replaced my gateway). the site changes often and they saved me a bundle.

i have used both companies support, and dell's was far better than the cow company.

i would buy dell again.

clonetek: screw the truck, comp specs? Youre not an intel boy are you?

And as many have said, dell is probably the safest way to go. They have excellent warranties and theyre usually quick to get cracking when a warranty is needed.

And as JDM mentioned, building your own is by far the cheapest way to go, as clonetek and I build our own, but as JDM pointed out, you have to know how to maintain and repair them yourself to reap the benefits. Also, once you figure in all the preloaded software that the dells come with, thats a big chunk of change - unless you know *where* to get the *right price* on software

DELL DELL DELL

This is all we buy and sell at our company and we've found them to be the most relaible....Plus great customer service when or if things go wrong.

Gateway is having a lot of financial issues so I'd keep an eye out for them at this time......

After selling computers for over 3 years for Staples (office supply store), I've sold numerous HP and Compaq computers and wouldn't own one of them if it were given to me for free...

For my money and my business's money, we went with Gateway.

About 5 months ago, I purchased 5 desktops and three laptops from gateway because they were simply the best value.

I priced Dell with nearly identical specs and the gateway came in a few hundred cheaper however, PRICE WAS NOT AN ISSUE with our computer hardware.

I'm a geologist (environmental consultant) and our computers are our equipment. We'd pay TOP DOLLAR for whatever computer that we went with but, after many hours of listening to folks buying Compaqs, I ruled out Dell.

Also, as far as the financial situation that both are in... they're both not posting the numbers that they'd like to be. I have a very good friend that works for Dell in Nashville and she's very worried about her position (she's in mgmt). Also, just a tiny tid-bit of information... sure, she owns a dell (because she got it next to free) but, she recommended to me to buy Gateway. That said something to me... their own people not supporting them!? Something's wrong there...

BUY THE COW!

RockPick, others
I've been right there in your shoes. I use to work for GE Capital IT Solutions and worked speciically with the State of Alabama. We only sold to Fortune 1000's, government, and education. The education side had contracts to buy only Compaq's on a special incentive program. Compaq is not a fun company to deal with at all. I spent 5 of my 15 moths there, tring to fix orders as old as a year that hadn't even shipped yet. Sometimes the was 3 or 4 model differences between the time of the PO and the time of shipment. It usually took 3 phone calls to fix one order and that's after 1n hour of research. HP is almost as bad but not quite, they make really good printers and scanners and that is what I use at home. Their PC's are not that great, very un-upgradable.

Build your own. Most ppl look at you funny when you say you've built your own. I didnt think it was that rare.

The computer itself didnt cost me more then $1500 and it was the fastest thing on the market at the time(its a Athlon1900XP). I configured a similar Alienware which was somewhere up there at $3000 not including monitor. If you build your own you can get AMD which Dell does not offer(last time i checked). Or if you do decied to build your own you could wait for the new AMD series CPU which will basically rape whatever intel will have. www.pricewatch.com is a good site to know if you build your own

MEAT BAG: whats up with that keyboard man? LOL
having a keyboard like that on a badass machine, is like having a chain link steering wheel on a 2003 cobra.

Dell all the way. Had a gateway laptop. It was a total POS. Gateway service is even worse. One of the many replacements they sent me actually had a bent frame by the floppy that wouldn't let me put my dvd drive in. How that got past Quality Control I have no clue. Maybe because they don't have a QC dept? They also sent me computers missing parts. I ended up calling the BBB and getting a full refund. (by that time the computer was 6 months old) Now I have a Dell laptop. It has had its problems, but Dell fixes them. Their service contracters aren't the best, but probably the best you'll find. They upgrade you too. The first dell laptop I was eventually determinted to be a lemmon, so they sent a replacement that is 10 times better. All for free, under warranty. Oh yeah, warranty on my Dell is next day on site, no one tops it.
