Wide-Screen TV's
What do you guy's think of wide-screen TV's? I'm problably going to get one in a week or two. Does anyone have one? What do you think about it? Does it have surround sound? Which is best? Digital or High Definition? What brandnames are good? Tell me all you know! Regards...Joe.
I have a 47" Mitsubishi rear projection 16x9 ratio. It did not come with a HDTV tuner but is HDTV Compatible. I purchased Direct TV with a HDTV tuner and dish. I receive HDNet ( www.hd.net ) and HBO in High Definition. Wow it is amazing to see a live baseball game on HDTV. When I watch a game last week with my son, the first comment out of his mouth was "it is like we are sitting in the stands". It is pretty amazing.
I have tried Digital Cable from two different providers and the picture quality is NO WHERE near the Direct TVs (non-HDTV) quality. The only draw back is when a bad storm goes through the signal does go out on Direct TV. Not a big deal to me, but I could see where a bad storm going through in the last two minutes of a tied game could be cause for some serious aggravation.
I wish the FCC would get off their B#TTS and do something. I read where they were going to require all TV sets over 36Ó to be manufactured with digital tuners by 2007. BFD. That will do NOTHING to get stations, satellite, or Cable companies to supply HDTV signals. Also there are no requirements by the FCC to have Cable companies supply HDTV signals. Cable is how the majority of Americans receive a TV signal. The direction things are heading right now I do not see HDTV signals becoming norm in the US for at least another 10-20 years. MAN THAT IS DEPRESSING É the most powerful county on earth cannot accomplish this pretty simple task. They have wasted BILLIONS of dollars studying how to implement HDTV over the last 10 years and we HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT. (OK I have two channels. BFD )
Some of the local stations broadcast some shows in HDTV, but I have no way of getting a good reception and I am only 25 miles north of Atlanta. I could use the Tuner that came with Direct TV for local HDTV broadcasts. I tried a number of different antennas and none worked.
I am very happy with the Mitsubishi and with Direct TV. Sorry for my rants regarding HDTV, I did not know I felt this strongly on the subject

Thanks for the info. I also have Direct Digital TV. So I think everything will work out OK.
Yeah, the cable companies need to be updated along with the technology as it rolls out. Why do they spend billions of dollars on something and not do anything with it? Well anyways, I watched a NASCAR race on my neighbor's wide screen tv. And it sounded like I where right there in the stands! It' just to cool!

The FCC is going to enforce the switch to HDTV for cable. The reason I know this is I work for a local cable co. Reason the fcc wants to enforce the switch is they want those frequencies back from the cable co's so they can resell them to other companies. For use in other products. Right now our frequency range here is from around 25 MHZ all the way to 723 MHZ.
cable guy ,,, I realize the FCC has been threatening cable companies for years. I have not heard of any date given as a dead line for this great change to be completed. Do you know the date? I wish it was going to be next year (the year that was originally discussed in the 90's) ...
A friend that owned a couple of small cable systems in GA and NC sold his systems at an extremely inflated value. He was happy, but the company that bought them is now in serious financial problems. (Actually the new owners are in jail now) With the merger mania that happened in the 90's a lot of Cable systems that were on the market were over valued. It seems to me that most cable companies are bunkered down in damage control and don't have the excess funds to invest in updating equipment. Hopefully you work with one that is already working on the upgrade. (Say you are in Acworth/Woodstock/Kennesaw, GA ... please)

I think it is the Lifestyle 50, all I remeber is I paid a hell of a lot of money for it but it was all worth it. I don't use the stock bose receiver anymore my brother had me upgrade to a real good sony one that allows me have true 5.1 DTS. The system has the center channel, all the little Jewel cube speakers, and the sub. I really like when some movies have the THX test in the beginning because it makes everthying in my living room vibrate and rattle.
I just bought direct tv for my 57 inch Toshiba 16x9 and I love it. The picture is awesome. The dealer I spoke with said that all tv stations have to be HD and widescreen by 2006. I was also told this at best buy when I got the TV.
