Better gas mileage?
I am not having any luck with the forum search option, so I am sure I am asking a question that has been asked before.
Is there any way of getting better gas mileage from my 5.4L Expedition (without stating the obvious; changing rear gears, losing weight off of it, not driving it at all, or buying a Honda)?
I could care less about the gas milage, but my wife is the one that drives it and she thinks that 13-14 city and 18 hwy is not good enough, so for her sake, I am asking the question.
I was not sure if things like aftermarket exhaust or air filter kits or things like that really worked for saving gas.
Anything would be helpful,
Jeremy

first....
save some major bucks(by not having to buy another filter again and improving the air flow to engine) and buy a K@N filter.2nd lets look at the exhaust,we don,t want it loud 'cause it,s mamas sled,a borla would be nice and simple and not loud.3rd you can go with a chip and have mike burn it more for milage than performance. now your still under a 1000 clams here think she,ll go for it?4th convincing her that she really wants to do this, i don,t think there,s a thread on this web site for that sssooo your on your own there bud...good luck
Thanks for the advice so far.
Now when you are mentioning exhaust, are you refering to just the cat-back, or cat-back and hi-flow cats/intermediate pipe or something even more.
And about the air intake, is that just an air filter or a whole different air intake system.
Also, what about different spark plugs (heat ranges, copper, etc.)

bedcover?
on an expo? now thats a mod...J/K..air fiter was my suggestion, you can go with the FIPK, but if mamas thinking your turning it into a hot rod by seeing that, then the games up...the exhaust is a cat back,i don,t think the high flows will be necessary because i don,t think she,ll be red lining it to the mall or improving her 60,s gettting to that parking space. my wife has an exploder and i,ve done the mods without her even noticing...well except "it gets on the highway so much better now" or "the milage on the center console thing a ma jig seems to be higher than it was before, isnt that wierd?"
but it has a v-6 and i got the milage in the city up from 15.5 to 16.3 and the highway is up from 18.3 to 20.5 and thats running premium all the time. the saying is "start slower, mod longer" for us married guy,s..good luck and happy modding

My wife is all too familiar to the Mod game. I got a 99 cobra that I have done some work to. My problem is I have never tried to get better gas mileage with it, just horsepower.
I know how the parts work on a mustang, just wasn't 100% sure if the same principles worked on the bigger trucks and SUVS. That is why I came hear to ask the experts; the people that know what works and what doesn't.
So far this is what I've got: intake and exhast.
First intake: Is it okay to just replace the filter or is it best recommended to use FIPK. A ~$150 difference in price is a good chunk of change.
Second exhaust: I would like something good, not necessarily loud. A little louder than stock is okay, but remember, this is my wife's vehicle and she doesn't want it sounding like a stockcar. I have seem Borla, Gibson, Dynomax, Flowmaster, Magnaflow, and Bassani mentioned on this website, just to name a few. I was wanting to know what people think would be the best exhaust for my situation. I have a Dynomax exhaust on my cobra and love it, but I don't think that is what she is wanting.
And thanks for the welcome.

A K&N might help a bit. A new exhaust might help a bit but learning to use the environment around you to maximize the kinetic energy of your vehicle.
Use hills to build speed whenever possible, try not to come to a complete stop at a stop light, slowdown and try to catch the light on green. Basically anything that will help you stay out of the go pedal.
We have a Lexus RX300 with one of those accident machine.....ahhh I mean trip computer screens and you would be amazed at how much your mileage will change by thinking about how you drive and changing your habits.
Of course doing this isn't fun for long so it basically comes down to, you wanna play you gotta pay. Any V8 especially attached to a beast like the expedition isn't exactly going to be frugal.
Good luck

Rustman, first of all welcome to the boards.
Improving gas mileage can be costly.
The first modification that i would do would be a K&N airfiler. I picked one up for $45 and the car runs much cooler. A very good start. The exhaust would probably be next but since you want better gas mileage, I would go for a chip. A guy on here can burn one especially for your truck.
As you may already know, exhaust can be an expensive thing to upgrade. Some go for as low as $250 for a flowmaster, while bassani can go for about $600. I dont think that a bassani would be necessary. I think that it would be better to just buy some 50 series flowmasters for $80 a piece and get them installed. Although it may be a bit lowed.
BTW, post some pics of the cobra. A lot of us here like stangs as well and have already owned a few.

Thats is what I have told her, keep your foot out of it and you should get a little better mileage.
So I guess I will try an intake and exhaust when money comes around for it, and maybe a electric fan if I can figure how to wire one up affordably. (Saw some for $450, yikes)
