Question Any OSX.1 Mac experts out there?

I just got a laptop yesterday, and I can get all of my software pkgs (printer, etc..) installed, but I am having trouble with the scanner. It's a Canon N1220U USB powered model. When I try to install the software from the CD, it opens a window saying something about a "Classic" enviroment starting. The status bar in this window goes about half an inch, then stops. It acts like it's trying to complete this seemingly required procedure, but never goes any further than that. it's not freezing, etc.... What am I doing wrong here. I'm not a computer tech by any means, so keep it simple if it's possible.,,,,,98

Sounds like the driver may not be supported under Mac OS X. When you install older software on a OS X machine, the system will fire up what is called "classic mode". This means that it runs a virtual Operating System (OS 9.2) in the background.

Go to this site: http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php...20u&q=download

I think this driver is just a plugin that will allow the scanner to operate in the "classic mode".

Hope this helps!

Thumbs up

So, I would need to d/l that first, then install the software second? I am in the process of getting photoshop 7 from a friend, my photoshop 5 disc is long gone. It seems you have to have at least 5 already installed beforehand?? The scanner came with 5.0, so maybe that's a requirement? I can wait, if that's the case. BTW: I LOVE this laptop!!!!,,,,98

Yes, down load the update then install it. The scanner should be able to run without Photoshop. Photoshop is just used to edit your pictures or create your own.

I'm not sure on the whole 7.0, 5.0 thing but that would make sense if the 7.0 that you are getting is just an upgrade. You can get a full install of 7.0 and then will not need the 5.0.

dig-it

Thank You!!

A friend is going to burn me a copy of both discs, he doesn't have the full install, just the 5.? and an upgrade pkg. to 7.0. Either way, I should be covered Now, a couple of more questions while I have your attention. Is there a "Dummies" book out that covers this system? (10.1 etc....) I am interested in how to use itunes and iphoto. I don't see how it should be legal to sell such a complex and powerful tool, without the slightest bit of instructions included. The OS is pretty self explanitory and easy to use, but the extra software is not anything I've ever used before.,,,,,,98

I'm probably going to have ALOT of questions in the near future

Question Like this one??

I downloaded the first driver on that page, which looked like the correct one. When I tried to open it it gave me an alert which said it did not seem to be compressed or encoded. This is as far as would go, and wouldn't let me install it. Hmmmmm?,,,,,98

Maybe it won't work with ibooks running OSX? I have run into other drivers that would not work on my older 366 ibook.

Use the OS X help

Manuals would be nice, but just using the help gives youi ALL the answers to iTunes and iPhoto. The iPhoto is the greatest tool around. Only problem is not being able to view the "books" on screen (they show up sideways). Wish my pig DOS machine at work had the capability.

The classic mode is, as you were informed, OS 9.2 that uses drivers too often are not available in OS X. It will load automatically for use until the second party companies develop drivers for OS X. Epson has no support for one of our printers, for example. You can go under the big blue apple and tell the computer to startup in classic or X...your choice...or just shift when needed.

Too bad those nerds at Apple didn't have the business sense to develop a line for general use. Our new, 800 mHz flatscreen iMac is great...especially when teamed with Sprint DSL. Fast, secure, and tools we can't use at work. And it came with a DVD-RW instead of the DVD-R (the nerds ran out of the cheaper R Superdrives .... so we got a RW for free!).

I shut the computer down last night to go somewhere, and when I came back it started in OS 9.2. The disc first aid came on and said "repairing" HD"?? That was spooky after only being up and running for about three days. Should I install all the older software I have in 9.2 mode??? The trouble seems to have started when I installed my Iomega zip drive software onto the 0SX.1 system.
Also I think I'm having mail trouble too Sometimes I will hit get mail, and the new mail won't show up until the next time I bring mail to the front. Like it has to refresh itself or something. It also opens a compose window EVERY time I open the mail application. I'd give almost anything to stop that, LOL! What do I need to do to stop this, can anyone help?,,,98

Thanks for all the great info so far, I appreciate it alot!!

Well, I tried the scanner install this morning, and it worked!! Maybe it was having a bad day last time? Anyway, does anyone know how to turn off the automatic opening of a compose window everytime you open mail from the browser button? Somtimes it will open just the compose window, and not the mail window itself. It's a little annoying having to open mail from the "dock" every single time.,,,,,98
