River kayak or ocean kayak? I have a 19' Wilderness Solutions Sealution XL kayak, colored "yum yum" yellow. Apparently, it closely resembles a shade of yellow that studies have shown to trigger shark attacks... I hope it was entirely coincidental... At any rate, no shark attacks yet, but I had a group of dolphins close in and play with me for a half an hour or so a few years ago around Hilton Head Island, SC. So graceful. I might as well have been clinging to a log.

I really love kayaking around Savannah because we found a lot of virtually inaccessible beaches that you can get to with kayaks. The beaches are generally blocked from land by wetland or swamp, and shoals or just shallow water keeps most boats away. We would paddle in around noon when the sun was highest, set up and eat lunch and nap, and then put in after 2 hours, all the while knowing that you may be the first human to walk on that beach in many years. We were always careful to bag up all our garbage too. It's a wonderful sport.

chaean,

I have a 13' 9" Old Town Adventurer and an Old Town 12' 9" Cast-Away...both pretty much river lake boats but I have tested the Adventurer in the ocean...I like it but am just getting into it...What I'd really like is to build a strip-built but that will wait until I know what I want.

I have a 13'8" Necky Santa Cruise. I like the Housitonic river, I know thats not spelt correctly, but what the hey, it's 12:22 am...lol!!

I do alot of rivers, ocean, and just a little on lakes. There is a river guide of New England, it cost about $13.00. call Colinsville kayak, their website is www.cckstore.com.

what part of mass are you in? east/west......I'll look in the guide. find some good spots. If you care to hook up sometime this summer for a paddle let me know.

had a double that the son and i used for paddling small lakes and going fishing. wonderful to paddle but not the best for fishing, so this year we've decided to go back to a canoe. am considering getting a single sea kayak for pleasure paddling though.

s'crewloose you may want to look at chesapeake light craft. i have 2 friends who have purchased and built their kits and were very pleased. even first timers can end up with a nice looking boat. they're not strip built but still very attractive. their web addy is:
www.clcboats.com

One time I tried to fish from my kayak I capsized. I had put in at Lake Lanier in GA, just NE of Atlanta around March, 01. Lake was still very cold, and Lake Lanier has some crazy thermals where the very cold layer of water is sometimes just below the surface. It's why we get a lot of drowning there early spring because a person would just be swimming along and hits the cold layer and cramp up. Anyway, I wasn't watching around me (bad!) and a wave from one of those crazy powerboats hit me starboard side. I had already set my paddle down so I couldn't do much. I teetered and then went over. The cold water was like a physical blow. I couldn't breathe for 15 seconds after I surfaced. Good thing I had my PFD on or it could have been much worse. I was already getting numb and couldn't get myself into the kayak so I swam, towing the kayak, to a small island about 100 yd off. Swimming with the PFD was hard but I thought staying afloat was more important than going faster. By the time I hit ground, I was burning up with exertion and adrenaline so I had to climb back in the water to cool down.

Wildchild,

I'm looking at pygmy and CLC as well as strip built...it does appear that the stich and glue is easier to get great results but I'm thinking I want to test myself and see if I can't take my time and build a great boat without rushing through it....its all still up in the air right now........JStang, We should hook up sometime a little paddle in the "close to shore ocean" is cool......I don't have a spray skirt yet so the big seas are out...........like I said, I have two if someone else wants to get into it......

The Saco River in N.Conway, NH is nice. We're in a seasonal campsite this year right on the river and see plenty of canoe's and kayak's cruising down.

Enjoy,
