Buying used. What to look for?
Buying used. What to look for?
I will be purchasing a used truck here shortly and have my eyes on an 97 F150 Ext cab. It is on the Ford dealer lot. I am just wondering what I should be looking for (past problem areas) when I go look at this thing.
If you need more details on what options it has, I can post those if needed. It has the 4.6L V-8 auto. 4x4
Thanks!
Dennis

Hey,
Just make sure the price is right and the miles are low. These trucks are great. I have 101K miles on my 4.6 Expy without any problems. These trucks will last a long time. Make sure it hasnt been abused.

I just bought a used F-150. I looked for several thing, but I can't say they would have stopped me from buying a truck, I just wanted stuff to throw at them in price negotiation.
1) Door cracks - dealers can't believe their eyes when I'd point this out.
2) leaks from third door and brake light in headliner
Things that would have caused me to walk away:
3)cigarette burns in lighter/ashtray. I don't smoke and hate the smell.
4) oil leaks around head gaskets
5) tranny leak
Also, run your fingers along all the gaps between panels. Feel to make sure the gap is even and so on. Crawl under neath and look around for suspicious thing/leaks. Pop the hood and start it and listen to it run. Listen for squeeks and so on and sit still and feel how smooth/rough it idles. Try to find out if it was purchased or leased. Usually purchased vehicles are cared for much more because the owner doesn't see it as a rental. If you send me your vin sometime in the next week I can check this, plus build info and warranty claims. stang6835@hotmail.com
I know there was other stuff, I just can't seem to remember it right now.

Thanks for the tip on the door crack. I never would have known about that, and after I did a search on the site after you pointed it out, wow, I'm sure it has it and will definitly see what could/can be done if I buy it. It has 70,000 miles on it.
GASGUZZLER007 was nice enough to run a carfax on it. Everything showed up fine. Owned by only one person and that was local.
If you are offering something different then carfax, here is the VIN:
1FTDX186XVKB35090
