Thanks for your honesty SSCULLY. Besides work purposes, most people probably don't NEED a truck, but the convenience is nice. I like the fact that we (my husband has four kids) can put everyone inside comfortably, and go out and buy a christmas tree, or presents, or go shopping, and have the space to lug everyone and all their crap around. It also helps when making large purchases. We just bought a 36" TV. My husband drives a Chrysler 300M... it would NEVER have fit.

It's a nice convenience. In my opinion, every family should have a pick up of some sort... so that they stop calling ME to help them move!!!

Yeah, I agree with the last two post. I really didn't NEEEED a truck I guess I could have gotten away with a minivan. But have you ever seen a minivan with euro lights??? It like lipstick on a pig.

I've driven company cars and vans for about ten years, two seater sports cars before that and the wife has a volvo so when it came time to buy my own car I found I wanted a Shadow Grey Screw in the worst way.....

What makes me angry is when people say "Why do you have a truck?"... "What does a girl need with a truck?"...

I get that all the time. It's like "Hello, I need to haul stuff too." I go antique hunting with my mother (it's her post retirement job) and I can't shove a mirrored vanity or armoire into my Blazer. Plus my friends and I buy so much at IKEA during our trips to Southern California that we have outgrown several SUVs and require a truck.

However, what really gets me is that I don't have a husband so I fear people assume that with my truck, fashionable but comfortable pantsuits and sensible shoes that I am not interested in men. Lesbians are lovely people but it's hard to attract a male when people think that girl + truck = butch. Part of the reason I keep debating on my mods is that I want the truck to remain somewhat feminine.

I know I am probably being oversensitive about this but it has been in the back of my mind since my sectretary asked me why I just didn't get an Expedition because it seemed more appropriate. I know she is not the only one thinking it. Who knows why but I guess having an SUV with the roof over the back is much more feminine than an open bedded truck.

Oh my god.. I love IKEA!!!

With that said...

Expeditions, broncos, etc. are nice, but not really practical. I mean, honestly, it's just a mini-van without the sliding door, lifted and cooler tires. I just can't picture myself in a mini-van. JMO.

I know what you mean about trying to keep your truck somewhat feminine, yet cool and tuff looking. I used to have a 1989 Ranger, and I had a friend do some custom engraving on the windows (roses). That turned some heads. Hmmm... now that I think of it, maybe I'll look into that again. It really puts a nice custom touch on the truck.

Thank you so much for your lovely words. I will kick some **** with my mods and I will feel very feminine doing it. Jenn, Cowlady, the other ladies of the website and I will lead the way for the next generation of women into the truck customizing shops to be comfortable in their efforts. Of course, now your male compadres will be annoyed that one of the last bastions of maleness may be invaded by us in the future.

Jenn:

If I ever get back East, we must go shopping.

In fact, the roommates and I are probably going to IKEA this weekend. I've been "informed" that everyone is off of work and available. We had been taking my roommate's mother's F-250 diesel (which I love driving because it sounds like a bus) but it only has an extended cab and riding on that short bench for all those hours makes my tush way sore. One of the reasons I got the Screw was more comfort for road trips. Now if I can only keep the guys from eating in my truck...........

So it IS a girl thing!

LOL! I get the same comments & "worse" like - "what does a LITTLE girl like you need with such a BIG truck"! That makes me want to SCREAM! I love my truck - I want to LIFT my truck & dammit, I will - someday! LOL!
I know what you mean about the conclusion jumpers out there - I recently was told by a guy (yep - that CHEVY guy) that I give the impression I'm not interested in meeting a guy. Trust me I am BUT I do NOT approach a guy with a truck with the idea of "ooh-ooh - a mate" but rather "hey - a new buddy"! I went thru a very abusive relationship & after I got out alive & in 1 piece I decided I was better off alone than to "settle" for just any guy, simply for the sake of having a guy by my side. I'm more discriminating now & if I have to stay single I will if it's the only way to stay safe. But if I met the right guy I'd be very happy to share things with - I just won't share my truck! ROFL! Fearless (my truck's name!) is going to be the biggest reason I stay single!
I think of my truck as a male simply because I'd feel wierd calling a 4X4 a female, especially once I lift it. I am not competing with the guys here - I just want to do some more "extreme" off roading & I can't if it's stock.
As for getting that "glazed" look, well I get it from family, friends & co workers as well as my priests, people at Church & my neighbors! That's okay - I glaze over when they talk about their kids or jobs or their "soccer mom" vans!
I just turned 48 & my Mom asked when I was going to "act my age". What do "normal" 48 yr old single women act like? If it's bingo games & baking cookies I guess I'll never fit in. If it's having the guts to be myself, to behave as a lady yet be able to play with the guys in mud & to not be cast into a stereotype then I am doing okay! Hey -I'm happy & so is my truck!
Sorry to drone on but I feel a sisterhood here & we MUST have a coffee klatch some nite in chat! We can use 1 of the other rooms & make it a Ladies Only nite!
BTW - I've never been to Ikea - I need help! When can you ladies come to Buffalo so we can shop? Ever hear of the World's Longest Yard Sale? I'm DYING to go to that - 450 MILES of bargains! Since we ALL have trucks just THINK of what we could buy!
BTW guys - THANK YOU for all the help & support & acceptance you've shown me & the other ladies here!
Lawgrrl - go to www.andthensometoo.com& check out her site & her truck! That is ATST & she does her own thing too & her own work on her truck & her house!!

he11 i helped my g/f pick her truck out. i also help her with the mods. but then again i taught her how to drive a bike too. guess i'm just a little off.
when we first met she had a 4 cyl firebird and thought it was great. as soon as we got serious i sold that thing and took her out and got an older (76) camaro with a v8. seems she's liked hangin' around with me ever since

My whole family has been into cool and tuff cars. Growing up, my grandfather owned a gas station/service station in Mattapan (suburb of Boston) and my mom would always get these beat up, junkers from him. My dad would then soup them up. My dad was known as the "driveway mechanic".

The coolest car she had was a 66 Cutlass. We also had a 70 and a 71 Cutlass. My first car was a 64 1/2 Mustang with a strait 6. I then had an 81 Cutlass, then an 89 Ranger, a 72 Corvette (454 big block) then a 97 Cougar (anniversary edition), then a 96 Cadillac STS... then my Screw. I love fast cars. I just can't decide which one I want next.

But enough about that.... Lawgrrl and Cowlady - If you guys ever make it to Maryland, we'll DEFINATLEY have to go shopping. And what's this about the Worlds Biggest Yard Sale? I'd be in heaven.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm from Socal but I would never assume that a lady was too butch for driving a truck. A secratary at work had abig ol blue chevy and she had a bumper sticker that said something like "No this isn't my boyfriends truck" .

Maybe you can start a thread asking for good replies to the "is that your truck" question.

All I can say is that as a the father of a duaghter I'm all for self assured women who know what they want and stick to their guns.

AU COUNTRAIRE !! - (or something like that)

EVERYONE NEEDS A TRUCK - at some time or another.

No one "NEEDS" a car, there are other forms of transportation.

Only the most knowing people drive trucks, and the best of those drive FORD TRUCKS.

Of those, only the cream of the crop spend time on this website!

The ladies here are in a "CLASS" by themselves.

IMHO

...snip....
Nothing at all not feminine about a woman with a truck, or mods for that matter. I HS I dated a girl who drove a nice Z28 and could cut a mean light in my Chevelle. She could do her own wrenching for the most part as well, and she didn't have to wear a nice skirt doing it to remain feminine.

Mod all you want, but just don't cross the line to being comfortable scratching and adjusting in public with greasy hands. Much like you ladies own the rights on garage sales and shopping, us men have to draw the line at some point.
