your actually right, it is a flaw in the test. once you get to your results page, press the back button twice, then hit View Results again and check out your speed....who knew pressing the back button a few times would increase your internet speed by about a million times

 

I opened an account at www.hotmail.com and at www.aim.com last night. I'll be in my new internet-connection 'Lightning' tomorrow night. I have 'paid my dues' connection-wise over the last year when using my home PC and my sloooooooooww dial-upper.

this seems accurate to me, I downloaded several songs a few days ago simultaneously, it only took about 20 minutes to download and burn 6 or 7 songs. The last time I did that it took a whole day to download 8 songs on a phone line. I don't know a whole lot about it otherwise. I love my cable modem.

 

Well were I am at cable sucks and DSL rules....

When cable first came out it was cool but then everyone had it and it wasnt good anymore but now that DSL is out and more people have it. And that would make all of the cable modems run faster because not every one in your neighbor hood is using the smae bandwidth.

I guess when you have been around networks as along as I have you have seen them all come and go. Are some cools things that telecom compaines are testing and should be very interresting in the next few years.

For me, cable is 2x faster and $5/month cheaper than DSL.

you are ok. they are just going to bring the "new" type digital convertor box, that has a bazillion channels/music etc. you will get better reception, but much better if you spring for a digital tv

 

Not necessarily, unless DSL has changed alot since I was looking into it.

Cable is more of consistant speed, yeah it's shared between neighborhoods, but not everyone has them yet. And it's always possible to upgrade everything to help out more and more users signing on.

When I was looking into DSL it's speed was dependent on variables. Like if your the further you were from the place the supplied it, the slower the transmission would get. You also have different speeds you can sign up for, for cable speed to Holy Batman thats expensive for internet connection.

FYI - were I live basic BellAtlantic DSL is the same price as cable, but with my cable company I get a $10 deduction on my cable because I have a certain cable package (pay out the @$$ for that one)

 

Man do I feel inferior!

I live out in the boonies (well only 7 miles out of town but still) so I am stuck with dial-up. I had a whopping 22.7 kilobits per second, and it would take me 6.2 minutes for a 1 mb download. Sounds about right.

My only options are satellite (outrageously expensive) or a new service that goes out over radio waves. Its very fast, about 1.9 megabits per second and costs $50 a month. The company is coming out in a week or so to check out what we need to do to get it. It may require putting an antenna up on one of our sheds or grain bins in order to get line-of-sight with the transmitter.

 

The "sharing same line" for Cable modems is right, but its not as bad as people make you think.
Figure, each node gives out 30mbps downstream, 5mbps upstream. IS each connected user going to be downloading FULL at the second you're on? No.

I went *** last September, I love it! Once you change you won't think of going back! DSL kept dragging, they said they were coming forever, I just got tired of waiting then initially was PO that I waited as long as I did because once I got the cable connection I loved it.

Digital cable on the TV is cool. You'll like it, tells you whats playing, what's next and next and next, gives descriptions......

 

No DSL or Cable available for me here, they say June.
