Supercab are taking over....
Remember back in the late 80's early 90's how common extended cabs were? Not very, at least not around here. Sure, they were areound, but no where near around as much as Regular Cabs. Now, since '97, it seems about the opposite, but even more so!! It took me forever to find a F-150 Reg cab short bed that I wanted!! Every auto trader magazine and all the lots are loaded with trucks, all supercabs (or extended, I can never remember). Is there a reason for this? Are they that much more popular?
I couldn't imagine not having an extended cab. Or having one that the rear doors don't open. I guess I'm spoiled having a '99f150 5.4 as my first truck. Having the extra room in back makes the truck very versatile for friends/family or gear that I don't want to get wet.
I had heard they were about 70% of the total built.
Different people have different needs.
It's all about demand, Ford builds what people want. If the market wasn't there it wouldn't be happening.
I spend 98% of the time in my truck alone.
And for the other 2% we are now a family of three so, the regular cab worked for me.
Family trips are for my wife's Windstar.

Pick up trucks have gained poularity with people who previously wouldn't have gone for that type of vehicle. I think the SUV's started the ball rolling. People love the SUV's but some wanted to have some open space too.
I think with the introduction of the Home Depot and Lowes, more people [think they can] "do it them selves". All these do it your selfers need to have a truck that they can pick up the material in, and also be able to drop the kids at school and then on to the office.
I have thought the same thing. Around here nine out of ten trucks are supercabs or crew cabs.
I'll stick with my regular cab short bed. It's lighter, and faster!

99Flareside -- as you may notice I have a supercab, being the practical grandfather of 7 that I am. On the otherhand I must say you have one of the sharpest "little" f150's I have ever seen. Only thing is that I realy don't envy all the time you must spend keeping that black truck looking so sharp! -- Good luck with it and have fun!!
I agree. Your truck looks tight. I like the L altezzas. They look badass. Where did you get your tails?

I didn't even know the f-150 came in so many different flavors until I started logging on to this site.
I can only speak for myself in that I always wanted a truck but since I started having kids at about the same time I was buying our first car we got a safe dependeble Volvo.
It just always seemed that a truck would not be a sensible vehicle for a family guy.
So that leads me to now. I needed a new car and was sick and tired of the minivan so I was just blown away by the ford SuperCrew.
The inside seats as many as an explorer and at a lot better price for a lot more engine and truck. For me it's the best of both worlds. A truck that looks good, drives well and hauls around the kids to their soccer games at an affordable price.
I just love my new truck and can't wait to start adding mods.
So don't dis the guy in a screw he's propably drooling over your lightning but feeling a little satisfaction in at least driving it's big sensible brother.

Personal preference & practicality are key.
I guess it all depends on what you use your truck for.
Isn't it funny how your tastes change over the years?
When I was in my teens (35 now) I thought that chevy trucks were the coolest looking vehicles on earthl, especially the full size Blazer - I wanted one so bad then, I could taste it.
At the same time, I thought Ford's square looking truck was butt ugly, and Dodge wasn't even a consideration. Also back then, the only cool looking trucks were regular cabs, the extended cabs looked like an old mans truck
Fast forward 20 years and everything changes.
When I was researching all the new trucks before I made my purchase, I took several things into account:
- Best truck for towing
- Safety
- Reliability
- Available Options
- Looks (based on a "How cool does it look" factor
After reviewing everything carefully, the F-150 Supercab was the hands down winner (for me)

You think SuperCabs are taking over? Maybe temporarily. If my area is any indication, SuperCrews will soon be taking over the SuperCab in popularity. In less than a year, my area went from my seeing 2 or 3 SuperCrews to seeing 2 or 3 dozen in a day.
Habibi, when I was a teen in the 70s, nobody wanted to be caught dead driving a truck. Back then, it was strictly blue collar (farmers, plumbers, etc.). These days, it seems like most people have a truck in the driveway.

In alot of driveways you see a SUV and a truck. I agree, supercrews will outgrow the extended cab and the suv will turn more car like. I think alot of people want a versitle vehicle. One that could carry 5 people and still haul 4x8 sheets of ply-wood
I think alot of people feel safer in a large truck then a small compact car. Today they are making the trucks with more features and comfort, so why not have one. Back in the day you said truck, you say rubber floor, bench seat, 5 speed..........ect. I have driven cars and still want my truck.

How right you are Dennis,
And, back then even though I was knee-high to a grass-hopper, I remember that trucks cost quite a bit less than passenger cars, oh how times have changed.
