quest. for webmaster or anyone from georgia.

wondering if you could fill me in on the laws and taxes and such of vehicle registration in georgia. found a job possibility in atlanta but i want to make sure there are no surprises as far as living expenses.
seen on a georgia site they charge by the value of the vehicle for reg. but not what %.
any other taxes i should know about? do you pay income tax to the state, county, etc?
what is the sales tax there?
i did notice property tax is very low compared to here.

i know, i know, don't want no d#$m yankees down there right? never considerred myself a true yankee anyway (yes i was born up here) i'm more of a wanderer. whenever i get bored it's time to move on

I'll try to help.

I've got a cousin who lives in St. Mary's on the coast of
Georgia. Her husband is a officer in the navy. If I can
catch her still long enough, I'll ask. I say that because
he is being transferred to a base in Virginia. I believe
they have already sold their house so I'll have to try
them by e-mail. I'll let you know if I can get up with
them.

I'll answer what I can
Sales tax ranges from 4% ish to 7 maybe 8%
Income tax is paid to the state.
As for registrating you vehicles...there should not be too large an expense to it...within a few hundred or less depending on your vehichles value (this is a guestimate and should not be taken any other way)

Hope this helps
Stan

Thumbs up

Don't know 'bout Georgia but, there is a Yankee Polecat Tax for passin' thru Virginia. O'course you could drive around if you want to. I hear the Kentuckions is always asleep at the tollbooth and them Tennesseians ain't worth a hoot at math so, you could come up cheaper goin' thataway.

wildchild,

A lot of the answers you need depends on *where* in Atlanta (city & county) you are considering living...here is Roswell (north of Atlanta), we pay county and city property taxes, our sales tax is 7% (I think) and gas prices are still the lowest in the country. Relative to where I came from, Connecticut, taxes are incredibly low, but Atlanta area housing is nowhere near as cheap (relative to other parts of the country) as it was five years ago...

Imagine my shock

when, after moving to Ga from Florida, and went to get my new car tag--advalorem tax--d/k what the % is but Florida charges no a/v tax.

With a dictator instead of a 'governor', and a gerrymandered, Democrat-controlled legislature, you may be amazed at just how little they d/k about taxing the citizens. And the height of hypocracy is the state-owned Lottery(for the chilren[sic], ya know) and a legislature that outlawed business-owned video poker games--that's gambling and can't be allowed.

Sales tax on food and medicine--outrageous! State income tax--stae robbery!

And if some of you think I'm getting a little 'carried away', take the time some day and read "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rann(?). The gist of the story is: One day the 'producers', the business(big and small) owners, the creators, the inventors, etc. say "We have had enough! We quit!". They go 'underground'. Now there are no more products, ideas, services, etc to buy and sell as inventories disappear. Whoa! No more commerce--NO MORE TAXES! In other words, "Atlas Shrugged", and flicked the world off of his shoulders--let'em work it out without the businessmen, etc.

thanks to all for the answers so far.
steve: as of now i'm looking at the stone mountain area. i believe it is in dekalb county. the advalorem tax is the one i was most concerned with as far as the car.
property tax there as well as purchase price of homes looks much lower then here in wis.
lightninrod: i know what you mean although i went the other way. moved south to fla, and loved not paying income tax and such. although the sales tax was fairly high and i moved there when they were doing impact fees for vehicles moving into the state. glad those are gone, my eventual goal is to get back to fla and stay this time. would love to move near my dad in naples but unfortunately there isn't a lot of business that way.
in a way businesses are already doing that. if states don't give them huge tax breaks they pack up and move somewhere where they will. even if it's out of the country

Sorry wildchild...

I couldn't get up with her. Looks like you got a couple
of answers anyway. Good luck with your decision.

If you itemize, you may be able to deduct the ad valorem tax from your gross income. Not quite good as tax credit, and you won't get that money back, but you do pay some of the lowest price in the country for gasoline, so it can even out.

Housing in Stone Mountain area is still quite reasonable. If you want to move within the I-285 perimeter that surrounds the city, then you'll pay a whole lot more.
