Anyone get a new job lately?

My Bf was told he had to provide the following or he could not get the job:
Birth certificate
SS card
Drivers license
and authorise a credit check.

Now I know they need to prove you are a legal US citizen, but usually the SS card and DL should do it. I did not think a birth certificate (if you have a valid DL) and credit check were neccessary.

Oh and by the way, it was only a assembly job, not some BIG Co that would require a means to protect itself by inquiring further than the norm. Funny, they didn't even drug test him which is a normal screening process nowadays.

nowadays alot of companies are using credit checks for things that have absolutely nothing to do obtaining a loan or charge card. The other day I saw (on one of the news talk shows) that car insurance campanys are using your credit report to figure out your rates. The ins. companies were saying that people with good credit are less likely to be in an accident, get a ticket, or miss a payment (I do understand the last one).Come on this is getting rediculous.Lets se here: I got laid off from my job (hypothetically) missed paying some bills so now I get to pay higher insurance rates, boy that makes alot of sense.

As far as a possible employer running a credit check, this is way over the top also. A lot of people (not all) applying for jobs are currently out of work and could possibly be behind on their bills.Understandably so if they are unemployed. But wait lets hold that against them because it shows that they are irresponsible and would not make a good employee Give me a break.
That really is wierd that he didn't have pee in a cup for them(I had to do a drug test just because I wanted to transfer from one dept to another). I guess that particular company doesn't care if you are drugs, as long as you pay the bills on time, you will be a good worker.

Thank god, I was starting to think I was nuts!
Yep, BF was layed off, and is having a hard time paying bills.
I had to change his ins Co awhile back, so I know some do that.
Mine just did and raised my rates, so I will prolly change myself.

So this employment agency calls him and offers him $10 an hr for a $17 an hr job that is over 40 minutes away, BUT wants all the above plus wants him to sign a contract stating the he will NOT accept employment from the actual company they send him to for 6 months, no matter what.

I told him he could not afford to make $10 an hour for 6 months with no health insurance, plus just imagine the losers he would be working with who would sign that. He signed it, because they told him he could "class" up to $13 and hr., and worked one day for them anyway.
He found out he would only ever get $10, and was surrounded by non english speaking people, that he was working circles around. He quit and they told him he had to work the whole week before he could quit. I told him he could work one day and not affect unemployment, but if he worked the whole week, they would consider him "back to work"

So then he tells the guy there were too many foriegners there, (wrong thing I know) and that he can't take working there. The guy says that they are very "diverse" BULL! what they are is a bunch of pimps taking advantage of non english speaking desperate people.
The next day he reports on the phone as schedualed to unemployment, and his case was close even though a) he still qualified for the past two weeks, and b) the empoyment agency lied to him about the pay, and he quit after one day. I know for fact you are allowed to make up to one half of your unemployment check is and I hardly thing $80 comes close.
I think they F'ed him. I mean I know they did, but I can't figure out how they did it, or what they said to make him lose his previous weeks pay.

Hang in there! I went though the late 80s-early 90s lay-offs. Wife and i couldn't even afford to live rent free at this farm house. We had to pay electricity and clean the horse stalls and feed them. The farm owner just kept piling on work until we couldn't do it anymore.

We moved 3 times in one year and I changed jobs 4 times. I look back on those suck jobs and make sure those people never get a kind word from me. I discourage others from doing any kind of business with them.

Better times are coming!

Thanks for the encouragement.
At least he had enough money saved to pay off his house, so he won't have that payment. I guess if worse came to worse he could move in with relatives, and rent it out.

I had my BF write down exactly what to say when he went to unenjoyment to find out what happened, and as it turned out, the computer made a mistake, so he is still getting his checks.

Some employment agencys are such scams, and he was a bit niave. I am now screening the agencys for him.
I mean he is not as stupid as it may sound, but he has only worked for 3 companys in the last 20 years, and he just got lucky that they were good companys. I didn't occur to him people would lie to get him to work for them.

good to hear it was just a comp. screw up......
WE (people that live in my small timberdependant community ) refer to the local employemnt dept as.......PINE STREET LOGGING (it is located on pine street) With all the new environmental laws and the very competetive markets alot (70%) of the local sawmills have permantel shut down over the last 20 yrs.Without my employer (Roseburg Forest Products) the best paying job a person could get (besides doctors, lawyers and such) would pay them 10 bucks an hr with no benefits. Luckily,I haven't had to explore that job market. My current pay is 14.71 hr with all the benefits (and I get to work an extra day a week- if I want to - at 22.07 an hr) What is really sad is that there are some people that I work with that have college degrees and can't find a job here (doing whatever there degree says they can do) that pays more than working at RFP.It is a hard lesson to learn :going who knows how far in debt to pay for school just to end up working at a place where you really don't even need a high school diploma to work. Its true, one of my friends dropped out of high school and got a job here when he turned 18.
