Toying with the idea of selling my truck outright and buying a bigger bike, so I was thinking what the sale value would be. Expected no more than 15 grand. Went to kelly online, plugged in the required info and can expect $19,065 in this area, woohoo! I just might consider it and here's why:

a, No more than 2 miles to work
b, Brand new Durango sits in driveway when we go out
c, Brand new Harley would get more use
d, Winter-minter for inclement weather
e, Bride can have the Sportster

May I have a consensus here please? ennis

I think 19G's is great price to get out of a book but it would be better to get it out of a buyer.

What bike are you looking to get? Road King, Heritage, Ultra cassic??

Okay, I ran it again today and got rated at $19,155 for it! Try it yourself. I was equally amazed as I did'nt expect to get more than 15 g's. I hope their not stuck in a two year old web page?

fourhour,

How many miles and what engine?

I put in 48,000 miles for a 4x4 (off road package) in excellent condition with a 5.4L

Trade-in price was $15,555

Private party price was $19,420

You will probably get somewhere between those numbers.

I also checked on Carmax and there are some 4WD '98s going for over $19,000. There is a '97 Flareside SuperCAb XLT 4WD with 44K miles for $18,998.

The engine compartment should be clean, with no fluid leaks. The paint is glossy and the body and interior are free of any wear or visible defects. There is no rust. The tires are the proper size and match and are new or nearly new. A clean title history is assumed. This is an exceptional vehicle.

Private Party value represents what you might expect to pay for a used car when purchasing from a private party. It may also represent the value you might expect to receive when selling your own used car to another private party.

Beware of kbb. It is run and funded by the auto dealers to make you think you're getting a good deal when looking up a price for a used vehicle. I do hope you get that for your truck though.

In my experience if you list the vehicle at the KBB private party price, you will probably not even get a phone call. You will be doing well to sell it for half way between the kbb wholesale trade in and the private party price.

Also, try putting in good or average condition instead of excellent for a more realistic picture.

Your truck may be exceptional to you, but a buyer is going to find something he doesn't like about a 4 year old truck. Not trying to rain on your parade, and you would certainly get more selling it private party than on trade in, but KBB is not realistic unless you find a sucker.

You can also try Edmunds True Market Value (TMV) calculation...it may be more representative than KBB...

Might as well look at everything...

http://www.nada.com/

I tried the webmaster's link and found something interesting.

I plugged in my truck and for Mileage:

0 - 40,000 miles = zero penalty

41,000 miles = (-$61)

67,000 miles = max penalty (-$1897)

400,000 miles = (-$1897)

Seems to me if it had 400,000 miles on it, they would pay someone to take it off their hands.

Okay, I tried them both, was not able to copy and paste. One asked condition, the other did not and one did not finalize the calculation for "private".

Edmonds: Private $17,105 Retail $19,521

NADA: Trade $15,950 Retail, $18,250

The fluctuation is amazing. The response here is too! I think what puzzles me most is that I bought it for $23,000 in Sept, 2000 and some of you suggested then that I had paid too much, then I go to the book and they indicate a much higher than expected selling price. Kind of got my wheels turning with the thought of upgrading to a bigger bike and downgrading to a cheaper truck. I really enjoy my truck but for all practicalities it does'nt serve any real purpose othe than carting my fat *** down the same friggin' street in comfort and style! Give me electric windows and a/c and I am happy. Of course that is after I discovered the thrill of cruising on a Harley-Davidson! I'm going to the Bahamas next week and will get a chance to contemplate this one. ennis
