ok, thats pretty dumb. when the lady asked to buy 2 of each sex, how did they have a right to deny her the sale? and if youre in a store and the cashier woint let you talk to her manager, why would you take that? i would b!tch and omplain until i got to see the manager. just my opinion...
The clerk's and Hallmark's actions and response are reprehensible.
What's next? They'll refuse to sell a customer something because they're fat? How about if they're Democrats or Republicans? It's discrimination and to allow even one form of discrimination in this day is unforgiveable.
How can a business even afford to discriminate?
BTW, when I was growing up, I didn't wany any sissy bears either!

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous. I'm not one to endorse homosexuality (my g/f is plenty of proof of that
), but I'm not one to discriminate because of it. If the store does not have that company policy in plain site, there could be a long class-action law suit headed in Hallmark's direction. Either way, I doubt that if that lady is persistant enough, that clerk will be there for much longer.

Oh man, if she was in line in front of me, I would have said if she didn't sell her the bears, I would not make my purchase and would be calling the local news from the store instead.
Gay bears? Now tell me who is the sick minded one?
Overalls vs a dress do NOT make for gender specifics.

Boys can kiss boys and girls can kiss girls. It is is not our business if they are gay or not, and I highly doubt a simple kiss like the one the stuffed bears are capable of can be indicative of ones sexuality. If that kiss is so sensual as to denote the sexuality of the bear, it needs to be sold in an adult store.
I for one will not be buying anything at hallmark, as they are too nosy/restrictive of their products for me.

Granma should've just said they weren't gay bears, they were European bears.
(My sis-in-law's mother is Dutch and at my brother's wedding, I must have kissed 100 wrinkled old European men. x_X)
(on the cheeks!)
(ones on the face!)

I think the real problem is that the grandmother was buying gay bears for her grandson. That is wrong. I don't necessarily agree with the way the situation was handled at the store, but I commend Hallmark for not promoting homosexuality.
Maybe, just maybe, it's just that each store received the same number of "girl" bears and "boy" bears and didn't want to run out of one before the other? Of course, if they only had one "sex" in stock, someone would just complain about discrimination! Don't even get started about what "colour" the bear is!
And if your getting something "free", shut up and enjoy it!
(it's just a stupid toy for cryin' out loud!) Now back to the trucks...

My take on it is the store is a private business adn has the right to refuse to sell anything to anyone (not very smart business IMO but...)
With that being said I think it was very stupid of them to not sell 2 sets to the woman. Increase sales, more profit, less hassle, no loud argument in the store...etc
I alos find it a bit odd hte kid wanted 2 boy bears but hey...that's just me

Hmmm... What boy wants a bear with a dress on it?
BTW, doesn't anybody think it's wrong to pass judgement on somebody else the way that clerk did? Tell me how anybody can call a grandmother gay because she's buying two boy bears instead of a boy and a girl bear?
Hell, Hallmark made the biggest blunder by not specifying that the bears were sold in a set of one boy and one girl bear. Advertisers MUST sell what they advertise and for the price they advertise it for, otherwise, they're held liable for false advertising.
It's the business that made the initial mistake and the grandmother had all the right to demand the two boy bears.
I know this issue intimately because I didn't carefully check an ad copy and it ran. I had to make good on it. I had no way out of it. I was allowed to put up a sign that said it was an error. However, if anybody demanded the ad price, I had no choice but to sell it at the low price. Needless to say, I only made that mistake ONCE.
If you look closely at automobile ads, you'll always see a qualifier. It might say something like limited to stock on hand... Limited to certain models. Or the special price was only on a particular vehicle with the license or VIN# placed by the price.
There are a lot of things the average person doesn't know about the retail business. Did you know that a retail business can't play tapes or CDs without paying a fee that goes to the record company and the artists? You also can't refuse service to ANYBODY if you don't have a sign that says so and that sign has to be OBVIOUS. It can't be some small sign hidden where you have to strain your eyes to see it. Sure, the store is private property and is allowed to set policy, BUT that policy must be posted in an obvious place.
A store cannot refuse service to anybody unless that person is breaking the law or any posted store policy.

What about those matching colognes for men and women? You know, the ones where the "male" bottle mates with the "female" bottle? If you bought two of the "male" bottles, does that make them into gay colognes and tag you as being gay?
If I had a ranch and bought two bulls, does that mean they're gay bulls?
As far as that store and Hallmark's response goes, it shows that they're bigots and I don't spend my money where bigotry of any kind is promoted. For all I know, their bigotry might extend to me because I may not be white enough, or skinny enough, or any of the myriad of things people express their bigotry about.
It's been my experience that if you find a bigotted person, that person is also a bigot about another half dozen or more other things.
