having lived there for 3 yrs and now only live 1 hr away, all I can say is good luck getting a room this late. Usually people are making reservations for next year at this time. I'm sure if you look around you can find some rooms, but you will be paying out the wazoo! I have to agree with the previous postings of DON"T GET ARRESTED! Also if a cop tells you to do something, do it, no questions asked. Instead of going cheap, I would suggest to go all out and enjoy the ride. Hell for $500 you could get a ride on one of the trucker parades and have the time of your life. So if this will be your only time, enjoy it. I also recommend ricks and maiden voyage, when you first enter ask for a vip card, it gets you in free and you get seated right next to the stage, but beware of the bourbon street clubs that are farthest away from canal street, unless your into that kind of thing. Go and take a peek for yourself if you don't believe me.
