Strange option
Strange option
Went to the L.A. Auto Show last weekend and saw the goofiest thing on an F150: a "powered" rear slider window!
Now, I know some of you just said to yourselves: Really? Cool!!
But, personally I've always thought slider windows on supercabs were a useless option because a) you can't reach them, b) even if you could reach the window you couldn't reach anything in the bed, and c) the only people I know who use them are burglars trying to break into my truck! I won't even get into the leaks.
So putting an electric motor on a slider seems like adding a useless option to a useless option; or creating a solution to a problem that didn't exist.
Anyway, I don't mean to put down anyone that has or likes their little window, I just don't see the point. Please enlighten me as to it's uses, and ventilation doesn't count.

It's handy to carry extra long things without having it stick out the rear of the truck.
Comes in handy when launching boats at a ramp. You can communicate with the person cranking up the boat so it's not a problem if that person wants you to back down or go up a bit.
It's a handy place to run cables through for magnetic mount antennas. Also handy to run power cords from the power point to the bed of the truck.

Did anyone mention that it can be used as a vent?? Personally I love mine, I use it on every warm day we get. You can open it as a vent when it rains for that nice cool air and give your truck that "rain fresh" smell without getting wet.
I think the primary reason to have a rear slider is for ventilation... is there another reason? With the back open and the moon roof cracked you get just the right amount of fresh air without having to yell at your passengers.
Did I mention the sweet sound of the duals coming from the rear slider...

I was just talking to a guy about removing my manual window and putting in a power one, I used the one in my regular cab all the time and figured I'd use this one if i could open it without having to stop the truck and going into hte backseat. I like the idea.

Ditto on the ventilation! Here in Fla. you need all you can get.
I'm 6'.0", drive with the seat (Capt. chair) in the fully back position and can reach around to open mine.
I agree about possible decreased security, I made a "track lock" for mine. Similar to devices used on residential sliding glass doors, it sits in the track and prevents the door from sliding.
If they want to get in (any truck) they can.

Indyfan,
the reasons you stated are the very reasons you get the power slider. I would never use the rear window if I didn't have the power slider. I love it and tell everone who asks about it that it is very useful and it does not leak! The only drawback to the window is that it is a little "pricey. But it is worth it.

I agree that the power slider is a solution to not being able to reach the window while driving! I too use the slider for ventilation. I don't understand why that doesn't count! I always thought that was the primary purpose of a window that opens! It's nice to have it open going down the freeway and to not have the side windows open buffeting you all the way down the road. The dog also appreciates having a place to stick its nose out the window in back seat!
Ok.
I do like some of your reasons, namely the ones involving tossing things into the bed and having the dog peek into the cab.
BTW. I saw another one yesterday, and this wasn't just odd, it was STUPID: A cattle guard on an ESCALADE???? What the hell were they thinking? That they'd make a Cadillac look tough? What's next, a trailer hitch on a Bentley?
