Unhappy ICQ Members ....

A buddy of mine, heard yesterday that they have found a problem with ICQ. He said that they have heard of people that use ICQ, having their hard drives re-formated by someone that could hack thru ICQ. Also, other stuff happening too. Anyone hear anything on this, I am current using 2001b version and have seen problems with 99b stuff BUT nothing newer.

Cool

Ok, found another one.

Security Focus

If you have an older copy of ICQ, you may want to download the most recent. It was available on November 28, 2001.

This is like answering your own question.

Good info!

I had to delete my ICQ recently - it lost some .DLL & wouldn't open. However, I recently had a problem with some offensive pics getting attached to an email I sent out. I do NOT store pics like these, I do NOT visit **** sites & I do NOT know how this happened. I am still trying to sort thru this - fortunately it SEEMS only 1 person got the pics in question & knows me well enough to know it was not something I would do.
I don't know if it was the result of ICQ but when I was looking for help in the user forum, the 1 guy there seemed to be able to "look" into my ICQ settings. I am not accusing him - he was busy helping many people & appears to be an expert. I just wonder if somehow it allowed 1 of these back door programs to operate on my computer. I need to see if I can find some way to detect this & then go from there.
Thanks Izzy - I'd almost forgotten about the issues I had w/ICQ. It was the most current beta version - I don't think I'll download it again now.

Howdy All,

This site here is packed with information. I was very surprised when I began reading his articles.

Try shields up and probe your ports. He explains how to take control of your computer and the information it sends and receives by using a firewall.

I have been using ICQ for at least 5 years and never had a problem ... I do get a lot of junk sometimes but it's easy to add to an ignore list. I tried AOL instant messager and almost instantly my e-mail was overwhelemed , after a week I had to delet the program and change my e-mail address. I tried others just to see what they were like but soon deleted them . I really like ICQ all my friends and family are on it , you just need to go through the settings very carefully to get the service you want out of it .

Has anyone seen wierd problems with ICQ lately, My friends and I all use it and we have been seeing it sending the same message for about a week or two.

Everytime you restart it you will get the same message that someone sent. I requested a authorization from my brother and he got the request for a week or so before it stopped. A another person sent me a URL and I am still getting it a week later everytime I restart.

I hate ICQ, I installed it, deleted it and never again. It's too easy to hack computers with that app. You can even download hacking software made just for that! I use MSN although not rock solid but I only turn it on on certain times and I sit behind a hardware firewall.

I don't know a lot about computers as the guy at the computer shop can attest, but the IT guy at work was saying the easist way to stop someone from entering you computer is to use a firewall.

Fourhour,
ICQ is an instant messageing program where you can build a personal list of friends and family who have the same program. It's a great little program that works in the background automaticly and allows you to see when the people on your list are online . You can then send messages back and forth while working or surfing and the messages will pop up on your screen, or you can go to the chat feture and chat in realtime with any number of people on your list at the same time . http://web.icq.com/ free download and easy to use .

Cyberhiker, Thanks for the info but it looks like that is something I would pass on. Not into "chatrooms" at this time. Spend enough time online with this board and a couple of ones I don't care to mention here! ennis
