P.a.t.s. Key Replacement

Sorry for the rant, I just saw the add and figured it would be a good idea to pass along this info. I know 98% of the people here would know this anyway....

I was just browsing the classifieds and came across an add for PATS keys. AD Number: 11283 FOR SALE: Ford P.A.T.S. Keys 98 & up

The claim in the add is that you can pay up to $80.00 for a key at the dealer, I'm not sure of the exact price but, that price depends on two things. 1, you do not have two keys in your possession that are already programmed to your vehicle and 2, that you want the dealer to remedy that problem for you. If you have two keys already the best thing you can do is go down to your local Ace Hardware and have an extra key cut for about $19.00 then, following the directions in your owners manual, program that third key. When and if you lose one key you still have the requisite 2 keys to program another.

Please don't view this as an affront to the advertiser....If you can't get one local, it works out to just a buck or two more to have him ship it to you (Uncut, I would presume)

It's true. You should really get the dealer to "throw in" a third key as part of the deal. It will save you big bucks down the road if you happen to lose one.

Besides, the third key comes in handy when 4-wheeling. You won't have the keychain bouncing off the dash! It's also handy when you leave the truck for servicing. Don't have to remove and replace keys from your regular keychain.

I bought a third key last fall. The dealer charged me $15.oo, I have the two original keys so it was possible to program the new key. My dealer charges $25.oo to program a key.

stephen,

It was your decision to pay the dealer the 25 for programing.....I just figure its good to know that you can do it yourself in 5 minutes for zippo.....the directions are in your owners manual. Everyone should try it once..it is no harder than turning off your auto door locks or seatbelt buzzer.........

I'm right in the middle of an exercise like this. I bought my truck used and it only came with one key, so I bought 2 of them from a locksmith in NJ. This weekend I'm off to the Ford dealer to have him program 1 key for me. Once that's done, I will be able to program the remaining one on my own. I'll post how it went later.

S'CrewLoose, I programed the third key using the instructions in the owners manual. The parts department told me if I could'nt get it to work, they could do it for $25.00.
