Unhappy

Yeah goals are GREAT!!! Like getting a good education, or paying off that truck or house, or sending your kids to college, or winning the Nobel peace prize.....etc. I am sorry guys but seeing who can get the most posts on a website is not what I call a time worthy goal. I am glad that so many of you are willing to give your time to help others with questions and so forth, but come on, starting meaningless threads just to reach a meaningless number? Is your life THAT lame? Sorry to rain on everybody's parade but it just seems a little trivial to me. It seems that there is a lot of this going on lately. Whatever happened to talking about things that mattered? No flames intended, just a little confused is all.

...then there are the goals of not letting anyone have any fun, and making sure everyone is serious about everything they do...

Exclamation

You don't sound confused to me. It sounds like you
clearly understand your point of view.

Who cares whether you think it's a time-worthy goal
or not? I was under the impression that one reason
people come to this site is to have fun. So what if
setting small, insignificant goals is what they do to
have fun. What difference does it make? It's not like
the person who started this thread is cloggin up a
more serious board. It's general discussion! I've
been here awhile now and seen many "meaningless"
threads. Who said everything has to have merit or
meaning? Does it really matter? If you think its stupid
or "meaningless", why don't you just ignore it and start a
more meaningful thread yourself? Maybe on how you
have to criticize someone else in order to make YOU
feel less lame.

Trapper,
You are correct, I do understand my point of view. I also understand that not everyone shares my point of view. That is absolutely fine. It just seems that there is a theme here recently. I have been wondering for a while about it but have not commented for not wanting to seem critical. There have been many threads and posts of recent for no purpose other than to inflate their post numbers to certain "Goal." I think it is great that people enjoy a web community, such as this, so much that they have posted hundreds or thousands of times. And I for one enjoy reading those posts when the contains good information or discussion on various topics. But when someone posts to a thread just so they can say, "One more towards my goal," what good does it do? I would feel much better about myself knowing that my ALL of my posts at least were helpful to someone else or at least conversational. And I don't think that I am criticizing anyone here in particular, just more or less asking the question that more than one person has to have wondered: Why is this a big deal? Seriously, does it make you feel better? I am just trying to understand the glamour. That is all, honestly. Maybe we can turn this thread into a civilized conversation about why this is important to so many people. I'm game.

Alright, let's be honest.

Ox,

I'll be the first person to agree with the fact
that threads like this, as you put it, don't do
any good. But my question is this. Why does
it have to do any good? This is a general
discussion board, does every conversation or
thread really have to be significant? You said
you would feel better about yourself if ALL your
posts were at least conversational. Isn't this
post conversational? It might not exactly be your
type of conversation, but it may well be for
someone else.

You also asked me if posts like this make me feel
better. I really can't answer that. I don't think I
have ever posted a thread like this in which I
declare a "goal" for my number of posts. I'm not
that "hung up" on numbers. Participating in this
one was a first for me. Therefore, I really am the
wrong one to argue this point. I addressed you
in my last post because what you were saying
did seem critical, sarcastic, and somewhat aimed
in my, as well as everyone else's, general
direction. You can say all you want about having
a civilized conversation and not wanting to be
viewed as critical, but what message do you think
you are sending when you suggest people have
a "lame" life or suggest that they are starting
"meaningless" threads? Your first post smacks
of sarcasm, just as your last one did. "Trying
to understand the glamour"???? Sounds like
sarcasm to me. Of course what do I know?
I'm just someone who responded to a meaningless
post that does absolutely no good. It obviously has
no redeeming value or social merit and should be
removed from the board immediately.
Have at it. Police to your hearts content!

P.S. What in the crap happened to the Colts this year?

Trapper,
I really did not intend for any of this to be pointed in your direction. I fully realize that you are one of the "quality not quantity" posters on this board. But since you were the only one who seemed to want to discuss it, it was you who I addressed. When I asked "Does it make you feel better?" I was refering to racking up your post counts to a certain "goal" number. Does that make you feel better? And when I refer to "you" I don't mean specifically you, trapper, just whoever is reading this. But my overall point is this: This is a message board, or more specifically, a DISCUSSION board. It is meant to be used as a place for people to get together and DISCUSS things. Even if a DISCUSSION isn't good or stupid or silly or funny....etc. at least it is a discussion. I don't think racking up post counts just for the sake of racking them up qualifies as DISCUSSION, therefore a waste of bandwidth. Looking back on my post, I agree, it does seem a little sarcastic. That also was not my intention. Sometimes I wonder why about something so much that I finally have to just ask.

I was discussing this topic with a friend yesterday about this and she asked the question that was swimming in my head. I just hadn't put it together as simply as she had. "What happens when you reach 500 or 1000 posts?" That is pretty much it. Why is that a big deal? Do you win a grand prize or more respect or anything else?

Anyway, I hate beating a dead horse so I will drop it. Policing this site is not my goal. I was just curious.

As far as the Colts, man I wish I knew. Other than being constantly plagued with injuries and not having a very deep depth chart, your guess is better than mine. I think that Jim Mora is a pig headed fool though. He should have cut Fangio and kept his job. I REALLY hate to see him leave. He is my favorite coach in the league. But he has his integrity and I respect him a little more now for sticking to his scruples.

Thanks for entertaining my curiosity,
Ox

Exclamation I've got nothin' but love for ya, baby!

Considered it dropped partner. We just have a
simple disagreement over the definition of
discussion. All of the sudden, I feel like Bill Clinton
agruing over the definition of is.

I'll tell you when the Colts troubles began. The
day they got rid of Marshall Faulk. What in the
crap were they thinking? Imagine, Marshall Faulk,
Peyton Manning, and Marvin Harrison. I'm not
taking anything from Edgerrin James, but I'd take
Marshall over him anyday.

Trapper,
I'd argue with you if I could. Although I think Faulk left for more money. We just couldn't pay him what he wanted or derserved (deserved is such a loose term, who really deserves all that money to catch or carry a ball?) Plus at the time, although he was producing consistently, he wasn't having the level of success as he is having now. But he also wasn't working with a quarterback of Manning's caliber. All of Faulk's production had to come from himself alone. I am glad we have Edgerin but part of me does wonder, what if? I think if we get some decent talent on D, maybe we can do something amazing. But because we are so lop sided on offense salary, we are forced to build Defense through the draft. I am anxious to see what is going to happen after the realignment. I will be glad to be rid of Miami and New England. I realize it isn't going to get any easier but a change of scenery will be nice.
