parting ways

well, I had a busy day today, been working the truck moving cars. Most of the time I was off road, it never occured to me to check the ball for the trailer.....it came loose . I was on a return trip when the trailer hit the ground (empty at the time). The trailer went under the truck broke the safty chains away, then went its own way, to the ditch in the creek. I returned to town to get a replacment ball, since the old one was ground to nothingness. the only store open was walmart, so I got a new ball and decided the best thing was to call the cops, they asked me if the trailer was in the road, I said no, then they said it wasn't their problem....ok I can live with no ticket. I then returned to the scene to pull the trailer up the 10 foot bank back to the road. About 30 minutes later the trailer was reattached to the truck (without wiring....I still don't know where it went) and back home. It is kinda emberassing to me, it is the first time something like this has happaned to me. Thanks for hearing me rant

Thumbs up Blessed

Instead of being angry (rant), you should be thankful that events went as they did. Imagine the horror of the trailer hitting you or another vehicle.

I hope your experience serves as a reminder to all of us to check and double-check our rigs when towing. Also, I'd look into getting a heavier set of "safety" chains. You might be able to control a missing ball-nut, but you can't control the quality of the metal that makes the ball/hitch.

Glad everything turned out as good as it did. Wiring shouldn't be too tough to replace.

Lucky alright!
Last year one of my co-workers was comming to work and a truck that was comming towards him lost his bass boat that he was pulling. Went across the other lane my co-worker was in and just barley missed it, and went off into the ditch. My co-worker stoped and the owner of the boat did. They looked over the boat and trailer and found that the boat owner forgot to put the safety pin into the latch of the trailer. The trailer and boat didn't suffer any major damage in the incendent and all they did was get the trailer out of the ditch and hooked it back up onto the truck and put the saftey pin in. The rest is history. Just the way my co-worker explained it though was scary, can you imagin seeing a bass boat heading towards you on a highway?

glad it all worked out for the best. summer before last my cycle trailer came off when the ball came loose. luckily at the time my g/f was hauling the trailer empty while i was riding my bike in front of her. her bike was in the back of her truck. lucky for us the chains caught the trailer because we were on a busy freeway. really glad i was riding my bike instead of towing it.
funny part is we usually take the trailer just in case someones bike breaks on the long hauls, but instead we end up fixing the trailer.
