Really started thinking about life when....
I came across these while going through some files. This happened to me in Dec of 1989. Was driving on a very familar road, but was going just a "tad" to fast. Skidded off the road, and hit a tree.
The thing to note is that I was NOT wearing a seatbelt at the time. It's the only thing that actually SAVED me. I ended up in the passenger seat after it was said and done and walked away just shaken up and a sore shoulder. Had I been just a few inches more to the left of the tree, I would have hit it head on, and well, I probably would not be here now.
I ALWAYS wear a seatbelt, and just by chance, the one time I didn't, it saved my life.
Really makes me think how lucky I really am! (KOW)

I can't believe the similarities to what happened to me. No pics.
I was driving my younger brother-in-law's brand new Mazda RX7. It was Christmas day of 1979--slight drizzle--just before his sister(my wife) served us Christmas dinner--she pleaded with me not to go but I knew better.
We had been driving(too fast) for about 20 minutes when we got to a familiar serpentine road about 5 minutes from home. I got us thru the first 3 curves(at 70-75 mph) but when we entered the 4th one, I saw a Datsun sedan coming towards us in the other lane. About that time, oversteer reared its ugly head and the rear end started coming around--I had no control/traction. We slammed into the left front of the Datsun with the Mazda's left front. I had a second or two to realize what was about to happen--I new we would both die. I then felt a devastating crash/stop and heard the loudest noise I've ever heard and then I blacked out.
Woke up seconds/minutes later, on my right side, curled up, jammed in the left rear corner of the hatchback with my b-i-l on top of me. Neither of us had on seatbelts either. I never saw the pics of the two cars but they were both totaled. My b-i-l didn't even have to get admitted to the hosp. but I spent 9 days there and 30 days out of work--he had a few scratches on his arm and face--I had a chipped pelvic bone and 3 cracked ribs--thank God. The teenager in the Datsun had a torn shoulder muscle.
I NEVER drive without seatbelts--then or now. My son won't even start his car until everyone is buckled in. I guess I forgot to buckle up with the new-car excitement? Btw, my first radar detector--the first Escort--survived that crash and is still working now.

I also lost control of a first generation RX-7, an 82 to be exact. It's my fiances car, but I was driving us home one night after visiting some friends. We came to this curve we both liked to take faster than usual, and the back end slid out pretty good. After two fishtails I got it corrected and stopped, without hitting anything! No ditch, trees or any other objects harmed. Needless to say I take it easy in that car when it's wet now. That car has the best handling of any car I've driven, besides my long since gone 75 Mercedes 240D
. I also religiously wear my seatbelt, feel weird without it holding me in the seat.,,,,98
