USDOT - Motorcycle Commercial/Compensated Use
USDOT - Motorcycle Commercial/Compensated Use
A questions for those of you that might know the answer to this one... I know there are brilliant minds on here...
A friend of mine who lives down south, is a co-owner of a specialized courier service. Mostly for delivery of computer parts and other critical pieces of small equipment or even important documents, etc.
All of his work vehicles have USDOT registrations. He's got a fleet of a few Toyota Matrix's and some Honda Minivans.
He does deliveries himself, and was considering purchasing a company owned motorcycle that he (or even his other workers) could use, but he wants to make sure it's DOT compliant. He's got the insurance part all sorted out. He put in an email to the USDOT, and hasn't heard anything back, and that was early last week.
Him and I have done some Googling, talking to other folks in the similar industry, and no one seems to know. It's like this gray area. Some say yes - some say no, and there's been a lot of "I don't knows".
He's got his eyes set on a nice bike with lots of cargo capacity, but he want's to figure this last piece of the puzzle out. He'd hate to have an accident or get pulled over, and there be an issue.
Curious to see what you all come up with.
My guess is - yes - he will need to register it and placard it accordingly.

They got back to him today, and it's pretty cut and dry.
It falls under the classification of: Transport of goods owned by others for compensation.
It will fall under his current MC/USDOT numbers, he'll need to register it under his USDOT registration, and placard the motorbike with his issued USDOT number, MC number, and company name clearly visible.
This will cover him for both interstate and intrastate commerce provisions.
