Camshaft caps

I have a 2006 ford expedition 5.4 triton 3v. We had a ticking that turned into a loud knocking noise. Took it to my dad who is a mechanic to redo timing. Got timing chain kit and phasers. When he went to check the timing before putting everything back together he notice the camshaft and camshaft caps had groves in them. We can find the camshaft but we can not find the caps. Can anyone please help point us in the direction of where we could find them. We talked about junkyard after searching online and only finding pictures now any for sale and local part stores who seem to not know what we are talking about. We would much rather put new than use back on since everything else is new.

Typically on modular engines the camshaft caps as you called them are part of the cylinder head and not replaceable. If you lose one or it is damaged then you have to replace the head. When the head is built, the caps are installed and the whole assembly is line bored, so they are matched to a specific location and direction, just like main bearing caps in the block.

Ford only sells the heads with cam and valves. They are remans.

Thank you both! That's what's we have learned by calling around and searching. Which is way way more than we anticipated. But it is what it is.

Unhappy

we had the same problem. reading this really helped. but disappointed cause it would be a lot cheaper to just replace the one cam cap instead getting another head

I agree it may cost less to replace it
