My NYC Photos
Just a question here and it isn't meant to be demeaning or accusatory in any way, but I do have a question.....
Why are you posing in front of a place, with yourself and your truck, where 6,000+ people lay dead?
I can see just posting photo's of the site and sharing your experience, but I think it rather morbid and in poor taste to shoot photos with yourself and your truck in the scene.

Not really
I can see why he posed them. When we see the news coverage, it is devastating but it's not as "personal" as these pics are. It's also proof he was there. lest anyone think differently. I am sure it was done to show how badly help is needed - looking at the rubble from this vantage point is far different that shots from far away or from the air. This just brings the impact home in a way the other pics haven't.
These do not bother me - the intention was pure. What does bother me are the reports of people scooping up dust to sell on Ebay! For starters, there's asbestos in that dust. Beyond the enviornmental & health hazard THAT act is in the poorest of taste! Showing us the true picture of devastation, when trying to solicit support is in good taste. I am praying I be allowed to go help, much more now since I've seen the pics posted here.

To Each His Own
I don't see anything wrong with it, it's not he's standing on top of the rubble. He captured the moment, that's what pictures are for. Looks like he worked his butt off. But to each his own....it's ok with me.
I took into consideration what you were saying Cowlady and JD, but the photos could stand by themselves without the posing of the truck or himself in front of it.
Don't misunderstand here and think I am not appreciate of the effort he and the thousands of others, including my wife, gave in this effort. It is truly appreciated and would never be condemned. I just find certain representations inappropriate and my guess is that Jstang wasn't even thinking of that at the time and it was an innocent photo....
Just my thoughts...

Cowlady, are you serious about people selling dust? I have
not heard any reports about that. If true, it's unbelievable.
What is wrong with these people? Anyway, I agree with you.
I think Jstang's intentions were true. Thanks for letting us
see the images, jstang.

Should be in another topic but....
World Trade Center 2011
A young boy is holding his father's hand as they visit
the new 115 story World Trade Towers in New York City.
The two new towers are called Tower Bravest and Tower
Finest in honor of the men and women who died there
attempting to rescue the innocent victims from the New
York Fire and Police departments. The boy looks at
his dad confused after reading the display on one of
the monuments and asks, " Dad, it says here the evil
men were from Afghanistan. I never heard of a country
called Afghanistan?".
The father looks at the boy and says "Exactly, Son.
Exactly."

FOYBOY,
Would you have belived me if I just said I was at ground zero? Not just on site, however right at the debis itself? the pictures prove I was there, and for everyone who donated supplies for me to bring, its proof that they were brought right to the scene and not stashed in some wharehouse.
I'll admit it was a shameful feeling taking pictures, thats why I don't have a whole lot of them. But in bad taste, never! I wasn't there as some tourist you'd make me out to be, and frankly I'm a little insulted at your comments, however I understand everyone has an opinion, even if they refect your lack of knowledge.Thats no slam, but unless you live the life of a Firefighter you can only guess how much it hurts to know soo many(other firefighters) are dead.Let me try.
400 of those people are my brothers and sisters ( Firefighters) I've been a Professonial Firefighter/EMT for 15 years, I've seen more death, in more ways than you'll ever imagine.
We(firefighters) would lay it on the line for you, but for me, another brother firefighter, there is no risk accessment, we DO "whatever it takes" for one another, its a bond you can't ever understand! I can go anywhere in the country, go to a firehouse, and get anything I need at anytime, why..........Because thats the brotherhood.
Thats why we travel all over the world to attend funerals of firefighters we never even met
I'm not the posing with any bodies, It may be a tomb for 1000's of people, but the intent of the photo was my proof that I was there, and when my 3 yr old reads her history book in school, I can show her I was there and I had a part in helping, and being proud to say that is being an American.
As far as the truck being in photos, isn't this F150 Online??????, why not a picture of an F150 in service to a great Nation?Honestly, I had it in some photos on purpose, for this reason.
Besides there are only few places I could get shots, where the truck wouldn't be in the way, ..........OH well if it got in some photos.
I have to cringe a little when someone has comments about how I do my job, or what it means to be a firefighter,....... clueless!! being a firefighter isn't a hobby, it isn't even a career, being a firefighter is part of you, your born with it. Its not what I do,.......... its who I am.
And my pictures are totally appropriate, your comments are whats inappropriate. And thats my opinion.
I'd show you the others someday if you'd like, No hard feeling here. You can come to the station, I start nights tues, for 3 days, or I'll let you buy me a beer some night.
fast5.4, I got the grill off e-bay, have another if your intrested, and the headlights, corner markers, fuel door and emblems from a friend who works at Torrington Ford in CT

Who cares if you can prove you were there or not? The people that you'll tell will believe you if they truly are family and friends. My wife was there and she wasn't taking photos to prove it. Her goal was to help as you did and return home. As for proof of where the supplies went, that's silly....I don't see anything in those photos that shows me supplies...only a disaster scene, you, and your truck.

I don't see any problem with taking photos for remembering, but framing yourself in it just seemed odd. By the way, DO NOT PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH! I NEVER said you were there as a tourist or even implied it and its very disingenious if not outright dishonest to imply that I did. Your insult you take is only because you want to be apparently since you see things I never said. By the way, you don't know me, you don't know my background or history, so who are you to say what I do and do not understand?? I addressed specific photos...not your life beyond them or mine, so stick to the topic at hand please.
400 of those people are my brothers and sisters ( Firefighters) I've been a Professonial Firefighter/EMT for 15 years, I've seen more death, in more ways than you'll ever imagine.
Really? Do you know my background and experiences? No, so you might want to think twice before saying such things. I am not demeaning your experiences and quite frankly my post didn't begin to talk about your fireman experiences....IT WAS ABOUT PHOTOS.
We(firefighters) would lay it on the line for you, but for me, another brother firefighter, there is no risk accessment, we DO "whatever it takes" for one another, its a bond you can't ever understand! Yes, firefighters do, but do you know what I have done for you if that's the way you want to view it? How do you know what bonds I do and do not understand? You really ought to quit assuming things about me as your way off base and probing ground you don't know.
Thats why we travel all over the world to attend funerals of firefighters we never even met

I still don't see the point of needing proof? Isn't a photo without you in it proof enough? Do you need recognition for being there and that's why the proof is important for you? Won't your 3 year old believe your word that you were there? My children believe my experiences without me having photos to prove it. I'm glad you had a part in helping and that you are American, but so am I, my wife, and millions of others. No one, including me which I think you are missing, is taking what you do for granted.

Once again, you put words in my mouth and maybe it is your way of trying to change the subject, I don't know. I didn't challenge how you do your job unless your job is being a photographer and I don't recall hearing that out of you. I commented on some photos you took, not the role you played at WTC.
As for who you are, I don't care. I didn't challenge who you were and you've really gone out on a tangent here. I know who I am and have special bonds based upon my background, but neither is it pertinent to what I was addressing here.
What's inappropriate in all honesty is that you went completely off from what my post was about and tried to make it seem as though I was attacking your job as a fireman and that is completely dishonest on your part.
I have no hard feelings either except that next time I wish you'd address the issue rather than trying to portray me as someone trying to demonize you which was completely wrong and going completely off what my post was about.

I care as may many others, you seem to be the one with not caring about what I do and thats fine, why do you feel the need to comment on my activities?
I appoligize for mis-interpitating your comments, to me it seemed like you were saying I posed with the debis, like a tourist would on a site seeing adventure.
You say you feel it is odd to pose for those type of pictures, yet any firefighter would completely understand why I did. That is what I mean about not understanding. It wasn't a slam, rather an attempt to try to explain, that with experiaces we share, we understand each other completely, while you do not.
If you are a Vet, then you have all my respect in the world. If not please fill me in on what you do or did that perhaps I could never grasp. Seriously.
I consider it an honor and a privledge to be part of of the effort, and wanted the moment recorded. I had something that was needed, and was called by the Office of Emergency Management, while NYC has turned away 1000's who have offered help. It made me proud to be able to represet my dept and proffession.
I am sorry if the responce offended you, it wasn't meant to. I wanted to share somethings that bind us together, to show that unless you where in the loop..... sort to speak......... that without similar experiances you may not understand how I tick.
I understand you were not questioning my profession, and perhaps I "way" over reacted. I was only trying to make a point.
The offer still stands (pictures/beer) ,however I will break your ***** over one thing...this is a joke btw!!! A Fireman feeds coal into a furnace/boiler a Firefighter puts out fire!!
heres a few without me or the truck in them

Jstang,
The care less comment you heard needs to be understood in context as I used it. I care greatly and am glad you are a firefighter, but in the context of the discussion of these photos, your role as a fireman was wholly irrelevant which is why I said it in response to your reply to me.
My comment on your activities was only on one thing only......photos....nothing else. Not what kind of parent you are, what quality of fireman you are, what kind of character you have, how bad your farts smell...only the photos.
As for your reasoning for the photos, that's fine....maybe you don't see what I do and I said that's fine.
As for what I am is not relevant here either as it would only further detract from the posts at hand which was about photos. If you want to know my background or anyone else does, I'd be glad to privately converse with you on it via email, but I don't see the need or point in bringing it out here.
I am glad and gratified that you were able to give what you could in this effort as many others did. I understand the point about wanting photos for posterity. I've done it too. Your photos in the most recent post are a good example of that type of posterity I see as completely appropriate and ones that you will for generations be able to share with your family.
Remember, I do not question your abilities, motivation, desires, or honor. That is not what this was about. It was only about a couple of photos that I didn't see as being in good taste. Of course, that's my opinion and everyone has one too and it may not be worth the typing it took to put it down, but I'm sticking to it.
I'd gladly sit down and share drink(soda for me) and break bread with you if the opportunity ever comes and as fellow Americans, I stand with you.

My farts smell pretty bad, I pride myself in the fact I could clear a room.....lol. I actually prefer soda myself. So you can't understand why I would have pictures of me, and I can't explain to you why. Lets leave it at that. good enough, the world would be a bore if everyone thought the same.
