Possibly interested in a Ford Explorer

Long story short dad had a accident and his 99 Mercedes M Class has about 7500 dollars worth of damage. He's going to have to get another vehicle. He's been out of the loop for a long time on vehicles and has no clue where to start. I've done some searching and seems like the 07 to 2010 explorers seems to be plentiful on alot of used lots for a pretty decent price. Found a 08 Eddie Bauer for 9k with 85k miles.

Guess my main question is are these good vehicles? Any known problems with these?

Thanks

5spd auto trans is junk. Other than that from what little I know they're pretty solid.

For as little as he drives he should have no issues

Junk as in? Last thing he needs is a dud and have to be out a transmission replacement. Especially with it already having 85k miles on it

It's similar to the 4R75E that you either get a good one or you get a bad one.

I'd see how it drives/shifts before you pull the trigger.

Apparently the 2002-2004 is the worst of them as far as transmission

He's has the Mercedes M Class and a 93 Ford explorer with a tad over 20k miles. Still trying to figure out how we are going to fix the M Class. With him in his 80s he doesn't like change and wants his vehicle fixed.
