Okay - the fifth plane is probably the 1 that made an emergency landing in Cleveland with a suspected bomb aboard. That was announced early today but I never heard another word about it - just that it did land safely.
As of 1:30 AM there are over 300 firefighters & 87 police officers missing in NY. Of the 2,100 wounded, 600 were hospitalized & 4 have died so far.
The building normally has 50,000 employees & was running at "full capacity" today. Estimates of the dead are impossible. Consider that they do not know how many were on the roof top Observation decks. Then you have any number of delivery people, service technicians, client/customers of the various businesses in the towers, people walking/driving by the building, rescuers in the buildings at the time of the collapses & you can see that only an actual body count can estabish the full depth of this tragedy. Early reports of the Pentagon death toll from Reuters estimates the # of dead at 800 but other sources have said 100-800 & they have no firm count as of now. Don't forget the 266 lives lost among the 4 planes either. I am guessing we'll see a final count of 10,000 by the time this is over. Oh yes - there was a day care center in the lobby of at least 1 of the towers - I pray the children were usherd out in time.
Now, with air traffic totally at a standstill we are probably safe - for now. What will happen when the ban is lifted & they can once again move about? Can this happen tomorrow? I would have thought it NEVER could happen - now I'm afraid it can & will.
I also want justice but I pray we NEVER become the type of cowardly animals like the ones who did this - let us remember that we are still human beings with pride & a sense of justice unparralled anywhere else on earth. We'll get the responsible party - let's not become vigilantes in the process.

 

If we don't hit back hard and fast, we will be openning ourselves up to even more terrorist attacks. We can't give terrorists carte blanche to us in our own country.

In case anyone is interested, at least for the morning I'll be posting news updates as they come in off the wire. I started a new thread in this forum titled Newsfeed Summary for Wednesday September 12, 2001 which I will at least update throughout the morning and perhaps even later if there is interest.

 

They have found apx. 6 fire-fighters and 2 police officers in the WTC rubble. They have yet to find a single survivor at the Pentagon site and the PA crash site, unfortunately. They are still trying to locate the ****pit voice recorders though. I would think they should have some sort of video cameras on board or something. Wouldn't you?
My heart-filled respect and support goes to all those who are involoved in this rescue/recovery operation.
This is a horrible tragedy, and will never be forgotten. Some are comparing it to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Yes, I suppose one could somewhat compare the two instances, but, Hawaii was not yet a U.S. state, nor was the attack on Continental U.S. soil. It was also a time of war across the world, and wasn't until then that the U.S. was involved. Today is, more-or-less, a time of peace. Albeit, there are some small battles being fought overseas, but not to the extent of what was happening during WWII. The death toll is estimated to be significantly higher than Pearl Harbor also. With 266 people known to be lost onboard the 4 hijacked aircraft, and the 41 already found in the rubble. In addition to these numbers, the WTC has ~50,000 employees, and ~150,000 visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Pentagon section that was hit was under rennovation, but still had many employees, as well as construction crew in the building. They interviewed a man that had been on the 87th floor of one of the WTC towers and "rode" the debris to the ground where he was later found. I believe it was the same gentleman that used his cellular phone to contact rescue workers so they could locate him, but I'm not certain.

I have watched and listened to the news non-stop since 8:50 a.m. EST Tuesday morning, except to sleep from 12:00 to 4:30 a.m. I hope to be able to give blood today...but the lines are very long. The only thing most Americans can do, is give blood. If you believe, also please pray for these victims and their families.

 

They have found even more survivors, but not many.

I have a question, why haven't we heard Saddam's name mentioned? Why wouldn't he be involved with this?

As a US Marine I can't freaken believe that this could happen. It's a sad time for America. We can either talk about it or we can open a can of whoop ***. GOD have mercy on those that did this. Time to first help the famlies and then kill a commie for mommy. Kill them all and let GOD sort them out!!!!GOD

 

I wonder if a threat would get the Taliban to turn over Bin Laden? Everybody knows he's there and that the Taliban is helping him hide. Can't the President pickup the phone and ask them to turn him over to the US? After all, it was only a few months ago that the Bush administration had granted the Taliban with $43 million of our money making us one of the Taliban's biggest financial supporters.
