Thumbs down

Jimmy lee,

I hope you are kidding about the draft thing. You should be
proud to fight for this country. I think most people on this board
would fight if given the chance.

Lightbulb

Folks, please don't be so hard on Jimmy Lee. He doesn't have the same life experiences the rest of us have. Remember, he's only16 or 17 years old. Seeing this at that age, I'd be scared too. Hell, my own first reaction to this horror was fear.

I'm 46 years old and I know what I went through with the draft for Viet Nam and you guys should remember what it was like back then. Lighten-up. Give Jimmy Lee a chance to be the young scared kid. I'm certain that he's just as, if not more shocked, than the rest of us.

Come on dude, the F-150 will still...

be there when we get back. If our country calls upon us for help, I hope you're next to me fighting for the Country that allows us to do and have the things we enjoy.

Jimmy, as I read your post, I realize that people here have not read it carefully. Yes, you are frightened, but I don't see anywhere in your post that you are a coward and won't fight for your family and your country.

In answer to your question, I don't have any specifics for you. All I know when you hit a certain age, you need to register. If we go to war and they find a need for more soldiers, they will activate the draft and start drafting young men if there are not enough volunteers.

Not sure if they will use the same criteria they did for Vietnam. As I recall, they took 18 year olds who were single and not in school first. If you were attending college, you got a student deferment, so you were not at the top of the draft list. That era was somewhat a blur to me.

I think in WWII, they took all the single men first, but if you were working in some kind of postiion that was essential for the war effort, you weren't drafted. If you were the only son or child, your name was placed low on the list.

This is all off the top of my head. I'm sure you can find more official information elsewhere.

the main reasonn i was scared was i posted this during the time everything went on when the 2nd plane hit! i didnt know where the next plane woutd touch down!
weather you guys know or not i live app. 60 miles from charleston probably one of the largest nuclear chemical plants in the country..many of the nukes our armys use have been made here. what if a plane would have hit one of those.....and as far as calling me a "coward" i am far from a coward like i said above if i had to fight id fight but i have close family that fought in vietnam my grandfather has war flash backs everyday he is totally out of his head its a very scary site and i do not want to witness some of the things he has told me about.i dont know if you guys saw the movie Saving Private Ryan but he said that was still not as bad as the war itself and ill be honest with you guys its jsut not something id like to expierance!!

You're right Jimmy

No Jimmy - you're not a coward. Nobody wants to be in a war, especially because we've just been attacked in the most heinous fashion. I don't blame you for being upset by what you saw on TV either - I was in shock most of the day & then that gave way to grief.
If you were drafted, I know you'd go & fight & make all of us proud of you. You'd give then a good ol' Southern boy's "what for" & they'd be sorry!
Don't worry Jimmy - you're having perfectly normal feelings & I do not think of you as a coward. I think of you as a really cool "son" & this cyber Mom is proud of you.

Jimmy and others
I am in the same boat as you I meet all the criteria to be drafted. Young, single, not in school, and probably not in a work position to stay. Both my grandfarthers fought in war, one in WWII and didn't see his son (my dad) till he was about 3 years old, the other fought in Korea. They have both since past away (God bless them) but I would honor them and my country if I really had too.
