Used Trucks

I am sure this has been asked before/repeatedly but I didn't find anything through my searches. I am looking to buy a used f-150 right now. My must haves is v8, 4x4, and crew/extended cab. I am trying to stay under $20 and as low of mileage as possible. What I am finding is 05-10 f150's with the 5.4 engine. From what I have read there are issues with these engines with spark plugs and cam phasers. Is this so common that one would avoid buying a used f150 with that engine or is it not as common as it appears. I think it is important to mention I would be financing this truck and it would take about 4 years to payoff and the last thing I need is a huge repair bill.

So should I avoid these trucks or should this be less of a concern. Also I don't want an ecoboost so please refrain from the v8 vs ecoboost arguments. Thanks for the feedback in advance.

they fixed the plug problem and some other stuff by the 08+ MY so thats where I'd look. I'd avoid 04-07 5.4 3v's unless I found a deal that was just to good to pass up..

Only some 08's have the revised heads. Look for brown COP boots. Black boots are old style.

Or - get a 4.6. A bit underpowered but rock solid reliable.

If you buy a 5.4 with the old heads, I'd hold back about 2 grand for spark plugs and phasers on general principle.
