Got $3500 to spend, should I get 97-03 or 89-96?

To me the 302 seems underpowered in a truck, just like a 4.6 does.

LOL, to me anything with less than 350 HP and 800 LB/FT seems underpowered.

My friend now has a '00 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0, so a 4.2, 4.6, 4.9 or 5.0 F150 engine will probably seem equal or slightly less powerful, considering the weight of the truck.

I had an 89 Grand Marquis that I put a stock 5.0HO EFI in, with AOD & 3.55. I towed far more with that car than my friend will with her truck. No prob.

I think what I'm getting here is there are points for and against both choices, but they're all fairly minor, so the answer is buy the best truck I can find of whichever generation. At the moment, there's only the one 95 I'd consider, but there are several 97-00s. Not presently any 00-03s for sale near me that seem like a deal. Gotta get out and kick some tires....

Thanks all!

I would NOT touch a 97 or 98 with a 4.2, and I'd think twice about a 99. 2000-03 is rock solid.

To me the 302 seems underpowered in a truck, just like a 4.6 does.
The 4.9 has tons of low end torque for towing, but as a daily driver a 302 will run circles around it.

Uhh, we must get groceries differently.

Yes, this is my current hoard. An "owned in the past list" would take too long to type out.

Yes and no, I'll prolly never buy another 302 truck just for the might as well get a 351 to get the same crappy mileage, and have a enough power to get out if its way with 33's. While the 300 is a great tough motor, just not enough horses for me.
