Why do expeditions not hold their value?

Doesn't the 97-02 expeditions have the same drivetrain as the f150? Only difference is the rear air bags and hvac, right? Why are the expys not holding their value at all? I see them for less than $1k on CL and not even selling. some 4x4s too. Most ads say engine is ticking/knocking (maybe clueless owner and a blown 2v spark plug?) or needs engine etc. Surprising to see since the trucks were $40k+ new and fully loaded at the time.

So is the truck to blame (old suvs are useless compared to pickups?) or is it clueless owners that bought expeditions that don't know how to work on their own vehicles?

Not sure what's going on there, but an old truck is almost always worth more than an SUV in my book because a truck is a tool. I only know about pricing on newer/in better shape/ lower mileage vehicles though, so not sure.

All the Expeditions and Tahoes I see around here look like their owners never cared for them and they all look beat.

Old Bronco's hold their value a lot more for some reason.

I suppose running a family in and out of them over the years takes their toll. But our NBS 2000 Suburban was in (relatively) awesome shape inside and out after raising 4 kids and 12 years of family service

Might be a mental thing, I don't know. It is true that I do notice you can usually always buy an expy for a good bit cheaper...

I'm betting most of those knocks are from dropping some form of 40w oil in those Tritons. My friend does mostly cop cars at his car lot and ends up with an occasional request for a replacement 4.6 after that kind of nonsense.

It's a double-edged sword with Expys, though. I was wanting to pluck one on the cheap, but they are either not overly well-optioned XLTs (no factory tow or third row seat, for example) or the EBs are roughed up with torn up leather and bad air suspensions.

There is also that SUV = bad for environment and bad on gas reputation that somehow trucks escape.
