central a/c

so i had the inside unit of a 5 ton unit go bad in one of my warehouses. (5 ton, 13 ser, with electric heat)

i can get a new inside unit and a valve that allows it to work with the older style freon that the outside unit (4 years old).
or i can get all new that takes the new freon.

I have kind of desided to go all new.

i have 3 options and sticky situation.
i have an employee whoses husband does the work and he will install a unit for $5k
i have a long time friend that will install a new unit for $5k but hard to say when he can come out.

both of these guys are telling me this is a freind deal.

then i have a family member telling me he can do it but it is a $7500 job. (this seems really high).

anyone in the houston area have anything like this done and what did you pay.

btw the unit is mounted in the top of a warehouse with a small plenum, easy access, copper and power is all there and the current thermostat is good.

I'd be more concerned with the brand of unit than the cost. The locally made Goodmans are absolute crap and won't last as long as yer truck payment. I'd be more specific as to the brand and the exact unit you want. Look at the units and especially the warranty. Some units like the Ruud have a 10 year warranty on the compressor and other components. If possible, I'd have natural gas run to the heat side as it's far cheaper to run. Trane has a good reputation as well. I'd suggest researching the warranties and life expectancy rather than just the dollars...unless you plan to unload the property soon. But anybody that has a clue that would buy the property already knows about Goodman units and it'll cost you on the sale price. I think you need to research more before spending the bucks.

first guy is Carrier

second guy is Ruud

buiding does not have a gas connection.
i have had to run the heater, maybe 7 workdays this year. cant justify the cost of the gas lines, having any type of building inspector around and paying the minimum gas bill 12 months of the year when my total use is 14 days.

i have a goodman in a rent house and it is going on 5 years with zero issues. but for my shop I have had the best luck with ruud and carrier. i have a 25 ton carrier in my main area and i love that thing.

Goodman has taken such a beating with their reputation that they have gone to 10-year parts and labor warranties on even some of their builder grade units.

5 grand for a 13seer 5 ton and electric furnace is high for my area. Central illinois. I would go with one of the buddies if you can wait. 7500 is a rip. As far as brand, goodman is your best warranty 10 years, any others with a 10 year you have to get a higher efficiency model for a better warranty. Either way tour buying a copeland compressor, ge capacitor, contactor and some copper. Its all the same stuff in different boxes.
I've been doing side hvac work for 10 years

Labnerd ,stick to oil testing,op should be focusing more on installation than the brand.you can have a top quality unit installed half fast and have problems, then the mfg gets the bad rap.my co will install Goodman as an alternative to trane, for the price

If Goodman's quality has improved, then good for them! That's what was put in my home when it was new (actually, a Goodman-manufactured Amana) and all I can say is, "WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PIECE OF GARBAGE!!!!" Having that unit in my home I have come to be on a "first-name" basis with my AC repair guy........

I have been told their quality has improved over the past few years, and my only response is, "How could it have gotten worse?"........
