I bought a few of those and put them in my outside buildings. The motion detector sends a signal to the alarm which is next to my bed. I really like the idea of the person breaking into my garage or shed not knowing they tripped an alarm, then turn around to see me standing behind them with a .45 in my hand.

While they are good, I have to be home to react to a break in, so I've been looking into getting the cameras that record onto an external hardrive and can also be monitored on my smartphone. In conjunction with the cameras, there are sensors on the doors and windows that will send a text if one is opened. I work only 1 mile from my house and could be there in under 2 minutes.... to once again surprise them with my trusty Colt.

Check out this new house alarm not even in stores yet, web only. They ship at the end of April. You monitor it with a smart phone, not an alarm company. Talk is home automation will be added as well. There is also talk of an invisible fence for your yard.

Maybe a wireless annunciator? I have had this one in my garage for 4-5 years. No false alarms except if the wind blows the walk in door shut. The receiver sounds like a door bell when the thing goes off.

Cool but self monitoring your alarm doesn't seem like a good idea to me. What if you don't hear your phone? What if you're somewhere you can't leave and rush home right away or out of town?
