Question Recommend a prof. scan tool?

I am looking to get a very good scan tool to read codes and help diagnose my vehicle.. But I would also like to be able to go out and check other vehicles as well. I find myself checking out small issues with friends and families vehicles to try and save them from taking out a small loan...

I did buy one from Harbor Freight maybe 4 years ago. It was good enough for my Blazer, but I am pretty certain it was only good for GM vehicles.

Does anyone recommend one to get for accuracy and versatile enough to be able to check any car with adapters?

Quick response is greatly appreciated. I am trying to help out my GF's brother currently..

If you want a professional diagnostic tool I have had hands on with the verus and modis from snap-on.
My dad has never had any issues with his.

But you are looking at a bit over $5,000 for a new one.

yeah. Im looking for something in the ball park of up to $400 to spend on one.

I understand the dealer quality ones run that high. But Im not sure if I need something that detailed.

From my experience with the MAC mentor, it was a really nice tool.

The more you want it to read and the more you want it to do the more its going to cost....

If you just want a plain simple obdii scanner then thats one thing....if you want to read body codes, transmission codes, evap readiness, abs, modules then thats going to be another...

Good luck with your search

The Versus from Snap On that was mentioned earlier is a great one. We have one at our shop that has plenty of adapters. The only downside s that it was like 4 or 5 grand haha. I'm guessing that's a little more than you're willing to pay. Our shop also does mobile repair and on my work truck I have a good one made by Actron. I think it was a couple hundred bucks. No more than $300.

Not that I am actively looking to sell but I have a new snap-on verus that I used a twice only that I would let go for 4 thousand. I am going to be using it tomorrow actually to see what caused my check engine light to come on? Also my ABS light has been on for a couple days as well.

That one from Actron that I mentioned earlier has worked on everything I've hooked it up to.

The $100 harbor freight unit I got a few years ago has scanned many a different vehicle no problems.

I bought a knock-off Ford VCM for $400 that does most of what the factory tool will.

I use the cheaper Actron, -scans everything, even Chrysler's. That was 69 bucks I believe. HF has their scanner for $39, just seen the flyer.
