Remington 1911 R1

Does anyone have one? I just picked one up, looking for others thoughts on this. I'm seeing a lot of good reviews on it, so I'm feeling good about my purchase. Stupid Florid 3-day background check has me picking it up on the 31st...

Frank S 12-23-2012 10:06 PM

The R1 is a good 1911 for the money. Post up some pics/range report when you get it.

Raptor05121 12-23-2012 10:40 PM

Will do. I'm reading some online reviews and I'm feeling confident as a first weapon. I was looking at Sig Sauers but the place I bought it from had those wayy out of my price range.

Harley Rider 12-24-2012 07:54 AM

Trigger pull

I am interested in how the trigger feels when you shoot it. Is it too hard, jerky, rough, or smooth?

Raptor05121 12-24-2012 11:01 AM

It says its got a 3.5-5.0lb trigger pull, and it felt solid when I did a dry-fire. I'll let you know on the 31st, I'm about to go pick up a box of 100 rounds to send through it

The SIG 1911's can be had for about $750 around here. They are really underrated and have few MIM parts. I bought an XO a while back and love it.

I was referring to P226/9s. I wanted one of those, but instead switched to the 1911 model. I might go get a smaller 230 or something for concealed.

i have a R1 and it shoots great! the trigger is really smooth and very light for sure. but mine was accurate right out of the box. i cant say anything about reliability since ive only shot about 40 rounds from it so far.

Raptor05121 12-26-2012 10:36 AM

Well I already bought some Houge finger grips and a tactical holster- I figured that would be more comfortable to carry when I'm out on my four wheeler. I have about 250+ acres of corn fields with large dirt piles 30ft high that are only accessible by four wheeler so it's perfect

I've got 100 rounds of 230 grain FMJs that I plan to send through it the day I pick it up. Any tips on oiling/cleaning other than what the owners manual states?

Good choice. Friend at work just bought one, and is waiting for shipment. When he does get it and we hit the range, I'll give my thoughts then prolly go on to just say 1911 for the win. Again.

Get a suppressor for it. For some reason(lock time?) a 1911 is the best 45acp host.

Raptor05121 12-29-2012 03:21 PM

What the heck am I going to do with a suppressor? I'd have to switch to a threaded barrel. I was thinking of getting a compensator.

I pick it up Monday morning. I can't wait!

I'm on my way to Tallahassee to spend the night with my old lady and I'll be at the store @8am banging on the front doors to pick it up. Pics to follow tomorrow morning!

I'd love to get a 1911. My old man has a US government Colt 1911 he was awarded in a US Army sharpshooting competition back in the 1960's but that gun digs into my palm. :(

here is the one i got.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...%22+Parkerized

picked it up for 505 at a gun shop did not want to wait for the back order. 4,000 rounds down the pipe later and its still goin bang just fine. works real good at 3 gun events as well. best 500 bucks ive ever spend.

the GI models go for less but dont have all the fun stuff on them!

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/p...sland+1911+.45

great 1911 for the money who ever said you have to spend 2,000-3,000 on a 1911 for it to run right never shot a rock island armory. 500 bucks havnt done anything to it but shoot it ALOT.

raptorman its 9:42 where are pics!!!!!?!??!?!

I put the hard rubber Packmayr grips on my Colt and it's a lot more comfortable to shoot and is more accurate to boot.

Stealth 12-31-2012 10:47 AM

I think it's a problem with all 1911's handle design, and my big wide palm design. lol Went to the FTW Gun show before Christmas and held a plethora of handguns and all the 1911's were the same. I'll tell you one thing though, the SS p226 mk25 is a bad mofo.

jgger 12-31-2012 02:31 PM

Pot, meet Kettle!.........Pics?

not a prob it makes them alot thinner and easy to carry. single stack FTW! :rocker:

i have some pretty big hands as well and dont find it hard to grip my 1911. some people love them some people hate them i love mine

Stealth 12-31-2012 03:06 PM

I LOVE the 1911 but the sharp corner digs right into my palm. I grip it no problem but it's like having a knife dig into my palm while holding it.

ive heard that from another person too. i dont understand. right in the webbing right? if i run my finger over the edge's i can feel it but its never hurt me while shooting it.

i just bought one as well! Great shooting gun!
:rocker:

Raptor05121 01-02-2013 11:36 AM

So far I've shot about 100 rounds through it, might go do another 50 once it stops raining. I picked it up at 8am, I was the first one there. Before I had it 30 seconds, I swapped out for the Hogue grips. They feel 100x better. I haven't fired a pistol in about 6-7 years, so at first the .45 kick was quite a bit. But I got used to it at the end. The trigger response is great, and it handles well. Not to mention it was about the best looking gun out there that day. I bought two different types of ammo; that Russian PPu stuff and some Federal ammo. The PPU kept FTF. The second round kept wanting to go up the feed ramp while there was already a round. I think it was the magazine spring pushing too much, but it never did it with the Federal ammo. Field stripping was a breeze. Here are some pics:

Already I have planned for it:

Ambi safety
Beavertail
Maybe new trigger
Compensator
Thinking two-toning it

Frank S 01-02-2013 05:05 PM

I know it's stating the obvious, but the R1 is so much better looking than the Glock.

Thanks for the pics !

CC268 01-02-2013 08:27 PM

I thought the .45 had a good kick to it until I shot a .44 Mag...haha

Raptor05121 01-02-2013 11:03 PM

I put a few more rounds through it today. I went four wheeling so the tactical holster I have for it works great for my mobility on the quads and off-roading. I didn't see anything I could shoot (snake, coyote, etc) but I did end up putting a JHP round through about 2 feet of water so I could witness the bloom effect. Its pretty cool and I'd hate to be on the receiving end of it! I'm completely in love with this gun. Its got classic Americana looks....deadly firepower....a "manly" sized caliber....and feels great. Not too fat, not too terribly heavy (a bit on the heavy side for CCW, IMO), and easy to maneuver and control, even as a lefty firing a right handed weapon.

I went to Academy Sports today to get some Rem-Oil for it...and ended up looking at ammo (I'm never buying that $16 Russian crap again, I'll stick to the $25 Remington rounds)...and I saw Academy had 900 rounds of 9mm for $185. Sooo....once I get this paid off, I'm either going to look at Springfield XDm-9s or a Sig Sauer. I also need to look into a CCW class before I get into shopping again, I don't want to do this 3-day grace period bullcrap again.

Yeah, Russian ammo is typically junk outside of .223 or AK. Gotta say I've always loved the way an all-black 1911 looks. Looks a lot like my XO.
