My complete love for Fords gets me into trouble!!
My complete love for Fords gets me into trouble!!
Ok, so I buy this mustang last thursday. 1990 mustang fox body. has 45,000 original miles. I couldnt pass up the deal. So I get it home and start looking it over more thoroughly. The whole car underneath is rusted out. Didnt really think to check that when I was there because the car had been stored inside. I planned on restoring it but it would take alot of work. Thinking of parting it but not sure if I can get my moneys worth. Any suggestions or thoughts?
many early 90's era Ford cars didnt have a hundreds digit in odometer, so once you hit 100k the mileage would show 00,000.0
Its possible this car has many more miles than meets the eye

It depends on how much you paid for it if you can make money parting it out.
A 22 year old motor, tranny and rearend arent worth much. Maybe $500 for the motor, $300 for the tranny and $250 for the rearend if youre lucky but a 4 lug rear with probably 2.73 gears isnt all that desirable.
Fenders maybe $50 each if theyre clean, hatch $200, doors $150, etc.
I had a fox body and dumped a ton of money into it and sold it for a huge loss just to get rid of the damn thing back in November.

this thing is pretty rusty underneath. frame, floor pans, and strut towers. it was never driven in the winter but michigan weather can rust a car in no time. got the car from my uncle so chances are the odemeter is accurate. he parked it a few years ago for a bad fuel pump. we pulled it out and fired it right up! i can post some pics up when i get home from work tonight.

I assumed 5.0.
Youd be better off pulling off whatever body panels are usable and junking the rest. 2.3's and 7.5" rears are worthless.
If its got a black interior that would be worth some money but chances are its red or blue.

its actually grey interior and for some reason has 25th anniversary dash. the interior is pretty clean no rips. even has a tach on the speedometer. not sure why. it does however have a set of gt stock wheels that are in decent shape. these were obviously added to to the car so im hoping those will get me a couple bucks.

those are the stock 4 cylinder LX wheels for that year. GT's had turbine wheels. GT's up to '86 had the 10 holes but after that just LX's did. In '91 LX's and GT's got the Pony wheels.
Your wheels worth about $8 each in scrap. Theyre not desirable.
If I remember right all '89 and '90 Mustangs had the 25th anniversary dash emblems so nothing special/rare there.
Its got a few options like the tach and power windows so its not a base model.
Gray interiors dont seem to be desirable. More so than red or blue but not like black for some reason. I personally would hate a black interior but everybody else seems to want one.
I see the hatch is junk like most are (mine had rust too) and you didnt post a pic of the fenders so I cant tell there. I bought new aftermarket fenders for my '92 for $75 each because the originals were rusty. Stock hoods are worthless and you cant give them away. I threw mine in a dumpster.
The taillights might be worth something to the right person because alot of people take off the GT cheese graters and put LX tails on. I was the opposite to that, my LX had GT tails because I liked them better.
Bumpers arent worth much these days because aftermarket ones are cheap and you dont need to fix damage/sand off paint.

i have already had a couple people interested in the wheels. they have a little oxidation but not in bad shape at all. i have also had some offers on the seats and the interior of the car. you are right though fenders are rusty. i work at a salvage yard though so i can come by body panels pretty cheap. he also threw in a hatch with the car that is rust free. i have it up on craigslist for part out and so far i have had some good response. im just hoping to get my money back and scrap the rest out. that would be ok with me.
