Became a statistic today....
Had a scum of the earth break down my back door to my house and take a few things today... It's not near as bad as it could have been, as the F only took about $200 in change and my .357 Mag.... Ugh..
I was stupid and complacent and did not secure my gun when I was not in the house.. It was in the most obvious place one keeps a gun by the bed and he found it... DOH!
The good news is my family was not home and the cats were not harmed and did not even escape out the busted back door (indoor cats). Not a single electronic device was taken or even our keys to just about everything we own! No files taken, the checkbook is still where it 'hides' and is safe...
It was a 'smash and grab' type of intrusion... The F went right to the bed room and went thru the dresser and the drawers and found the gun and the change and seemed to be happy with that and left...
Left all my ammo alone and my shot gun and air rifle, so that's something on the bright side... We have a big safe right there in the closet, but it's bolted to the floor and at least he didn't trash the place as would have been expected..
I actually do feel very fortunate that that's all that was done to my house. I know that most of these intrusions ends up being very devastating and even deadly so I am feeling very blessed right now.. (I'm not a religious person at all, but I do believe in Karma..
)
Anyway, it being a holiday week, lots of folks are 'gone' and it makes for easy pickings for the most part...
I went around to my neighbors and told them what happened and actually got a witness to when it probably occurred, but they were apparently very 'calm' when they left that the neighbor didn't think anything about it at the time, but they still were able to give me a time and a description that matched other reports of the same thing occurring all around our area today..
The F's probably hit a half a dozen homes within a 5-10 mile radius.. My wife volunteers at the local animal shelter about a mile away and heard the police scanner of reports of quick and fast break ins all day! Little did she or the officers in the shelter know, we were one of them!
Anyway, I'm mostly just telling this to say it does happen and while I always thought it "could" happen... Just never really thought it could happen to me... That's what complacency does to a person who has been fortunate enough to avoid the "odds" for so long..
Happy 4th to all and be safe out there!

Sorry to hear about this. I HATE FREAKING PUNKS!
Hope your insurance covers your pistol. Also just in case load up that shotgun, you never know when that Karma lady is going to show up.
Glad no body was hurt or worse.

Thanks jgger. I'm still debating on the insurance. I thought I had a $1000 ded, but turns out it's $500.. Just about what the gun cost anyway.
Debating whether risking a rise in premiums is worth it.
I want a new door on the back anyway, and with that, the gun and the little bit of change, I'd be looking at around a grand or so total..
Might just want to keep my claim column clear on that one... If it was worse, I'd claim in an instant! This is right on the border IMO..

Sorry that happened...FYI if you are a member of the NRA they have gun insurance which covers lost stolen and damaged firearms that you own. Additionally, as an NRA member, you are a member of what is the largest organization in DC fighting for second amendment rights. Which is very important; especially now.
Not a member of the NRA, but that's good info! Thanks! I'm not so much worried about the cost of the gun.. It's just there is another one out there that will be sold on the street and used for only bad things and possibly harming an innocent person... I've had a complete wake up call on this and while I WILL get another firearm, I will respect it and keep it a hell of a lot safer than I did with my last one...
I know/knew better, but when you get complacent with your life, you get lazy and it WILL bit you in the ***! I am now fully aware of that now...
Thanks again!

I hate scumbag thieves...I have no respect for them at all. I like firefighter's idea!! Sorry that happened on the holiday Mitch, but it just goes to show that people are idiots and scumbags try to take advantage of anything they can.
We have been broken into before so I know how you feel. Really sucks! I hope they catch them but don't hold your breath. Be sure to give the serial number of the gun to the cops. You don't want that coming back to haunt you when it turns up someplace else.
Yep, I reported the serial # to the officer that responded to the call. It's already in the system and if they try to sell it to any pawn shop, it's flagged.. But, I doubt very much that he'll try to sell it that way.. It'll be passed around on the street.
At least my butt is off the hook for 'owning' the gun at this point.. Still feel really stupid for letting it get away in the first place.. It should have been in the safe that's still in the house!
These scum are getting really brazen in some cases.. Even when they knock on the door and someone DOES answer, they rush in and take over and tie them up at gun point before you'd have any chance to do anything..
I don't open the door without first looking and if I don't know them, I'll ask thru the door what they want.. Then I might open the door where we still have the locked storm door and go from there..
It's getting to where I feel like I need to be armed and have the gun at my side at all times! I can too, since my wife and I both have valid CCW permits...
While I'm comfortable with the gun and have owned and used them since I was a kid, I'm really thinking about taking some 'personal protection' classes to make sure I can handle myself if a situation comes up and I am armed and face to face with a F...er...
Thanks!

Its a bad deal Mitch...If I were you I would go buy another pistol and a 12 gauge shotgun and get some slugs for it...I live in a rural area and we don't have much of a problem out here but I ALWAYS go to the door with a shotgun although I don't make it obvious when I answer the door...Its right next to the bed at night and my .45 is on the nightstand...Not really paranoid but I will protect my family and myself at any cost...Crooks are getting pretty "ballsey" it sounds like...rushing in on somebody in their own home?
That would be one dead sumbitch...Hope nothing like that happens to you or anybody else...But, it is important to always be prepared...Hope they find that sumbitch and lock em up. Check into an alarm system...or even some signs and stickers, it might change their mind.
