Maybe it was made to be towed by a Ford tractor?

Ford cargo trailer

If it is a small, covered, white, steel trailer, with a hinged top with a dual piston lift, and a 1 7/8" tounge...it is most likely the "towable trunk" that was intended for use by the original Escorts. I own one myself and it has been in my family since the early eighties when it was purchased new...still towing strong. Use it for our camping gear...cool little devil.

That's got to be one of the most expensive trailers I've ever seen. Buy 2 Mustangs and cut one in two for a trailer. When you get tired of the novelty affect, just weld the 2 halves back together and sell you "slightly modified" Mustang on CL. Least you're not likely to see many more of those on the road. No wonder it's a "money pit".
