Dell 1525 Inspiron finally took a dump.
Thanks! -Not good to go yet.
Yea, I was waiting for that line, - "it will buff out".
A little surprised it came from you.. Nerd.

That fan for it came yesterday, looks like a better revision/heavy duty in comparison to the factory part. I got it all back together,- went very smoothly, then stopped at the keyboard. The Keyboard hasn't arrived yet, - the rest will be a piece of cake.
BUT!
I'm not content about the way the heat sink went down on the processors. I've worked on MANY comps in the past and for heat transfer compound, I've always went with Arctic Silver 5, MG Silicone or HC 151.
Well this one has a silicone foam pad on just one of the processors, -the other has some junk that hardened like a hard plastic. I'm not sure what these products are and I'd feel better setting that sink down on fresh stuff.
So where would you get a processor pad in assorted mils/ thicknesses for processor #2 and can I just chip that factory plastic crap off, carefully on processor #1 and replace it w/silver ?
Any Geeks thereabouts?

I won't power it up until I'm satisfied it's going to run better than new. That frame of mind seems to work the best, most of the time.
On the flip-side, still get a little tickle if it works at all.

scrape it all off - lay down da good chit
jeeeeez.... N00bs, lol

Yes! But, that was more less a pre-lim, the easy question I'm afraid. But congrats! That is the correct answer for #1.So is that a pass on processor #2 ? That's the one I'm having the most trouble with. Haven't searched at all yet tho. I know, that's a terrible thing, I will, - strange tho, I don't feel like it ? Lazy perhaps ? People here can answer anything usually.
The pad on 2 is like a foam silicone membrane pad. No scraping to remove as it lifts and separates. Problem is, it's tore up a bit. It's also about 1/16" thick and the material is relatively forming. It will compress, hold shape and decompresses VERY slowly. Sort of a cool material, as it would fill voids/uneven areas (if any) between surfaces.
Yes, I might be able to compound in it's place, but it wasn't used factory and it's a completely different product as what was used on Processor one. It's definitely non hardening.
So, what else do you know buddy ? Ever seen the stuff ?

It shows the pad I'm referring to @ 1:04 in this vid as he lifts the sink off the processor. It's that purple pad sitting on top. -

I found some -
http://www.intermark-usa.com/product...al/index.shtml
http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/cpu-thermal-pad.html
http://www.dhgate.com/silicone-condu...768b54922.html
So they're out there and I have seen them plenty of times. Just not on the CPU's. I was thinking about trying Artic Silver on the second CPU, fastening it, then removing it in order to determine proper contact between the sink and processor. I'm not sure though, because of the sink design and that Dell found it a better route to pad one and not the other.
Another factor. The first processor have 4 screws, one at each corner of the heat sink around the processor.
The second processor uses the same sink, -an extension from the first. There's just 1 caption screw (bottom center @ sink end) keeping it secure on that processor.
Leads me to believe, - using the thermal pad might be the right move.
What do you think? Don't give up on me smoocher..
Your correct MGD, a Noob here and I would like to do it right. The cooler the better. There, maybe that will help.

So I think I better go with the pad on #2, - since the sink is ONLY held down from the one caption screw. #1 , -I'll use the Silver05 stuff, since it's held/compressed w/4 screws.
Now to find the right pads.

From what I gather, it was dropped. Looks fine, -fires up, gets fuzzy, shuts down. Sounds like me last weekend.
Thanks for the help.

Well, the pads came today. They don't look the same as the original, they're thinner and they sent me 10 of them.
Maybe it's an upgrade
Or maybe I have to sandwich them all together, -Yea, that's it!
Ieyiyii..

What timing, the HD just arrived. Man, that little thing has some weight to it. Much heavier than the factory HD.
Sucks tho. I have to disassemble the damn thing again. I have 4 screws left over
Not sure what I missed.
The real tiny screws.

Great, I can't get XP Pro to recognize these little SATA drives. So much for cloning. The MAC does, but I don't have cloning software for it.
What to do?
I would need 3 SATA drives to use the laptop w/vista. Only have 2 on hand.
There's a few other ways to do this, but I'd rather go from drive to drive.
Well, I'll try a USB to SATA Combo Adapter with OTG. It has it's own drivers, so maybe that will work w/XP.
